GOP Rep: The Reality Is 'Some Americans' Lives Have Gotten Better' With Obamacar

CATHERINE THOMPSON – DECEMBER 5, 2013, 8:36 AM EST

At this stage in the game what Obamacare needs is "more of a course change than a course reversal," one House Republican told the New York Times in a story published Wednesday.

“It’s not in dispute that many Americans’ lives are being disrupted in an important way by this law,” Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA) said, as quoted by the Times. “Is it also true that some Americans’ lives have gotten better? Yes, and to not acknowledge that is to deny reality.”

As the Times points out, the option to repeal the health care law entirely grew distant as enrollments in the relaunched federal health care exchange increased.

About 29,000 people signed up for insurance plans via HealhCare.gov on Sunday and Monday, while less than 27,000 had been able to enroll for the entire month of October. The increase in sign-ups has caused Republicans to shift their criticism of the health care law from the website to problems like rate shock and canceled policies.

Rigell might as well resign today, since he now has a zero percent chance of being elected. nt tridim Dec 2013 #1

It's reasonable to say that the law isn't perfect and that some tweaks need to be made (which is pretty much par for the course with the implementation of any major overhaul) but to simply say that it's evil and needs to be done away with immediately is shortsighted and cruel IMHO, particularly when considering that Republicans have nothing comparable to replace it with. The ACA does a lot of good progressive things that really should've been part of our health care system for a long time but weren't because Republicans care more about corporations than people. I just wonder how long it will be before this guy has to walk it back so as to avoid a teabagger primary challenge?

though he has it backwards and offer this correction ...

“It’s not in dispute that many A RELATIVE FEW Americans’ lives are being disrupted in an important way by this law,” Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA) said, as quoted by the Times. “Is it also true that some MANY, MANY MORE Americans’ lives have gotten better? Yes, and to not acknowledge that is to deny reality BUT HEY ... THAT'S WHAT WE DO IN THE MODERN GOP.”

I almost want to say that his intent was to say to his base: "Other people are benefiting; just not you!" - 'other people' meaning "lazy, worthless takers".

This would fire up his base, if that indeed was his intent.

As I said, though: I don't think his base has the smarts to detect a gambit like that...

But even though he tried to pander in his spin, the nutjobs will be out to make him pay for saying something that might seem to contain a bit of reason and decency.
