DANIEL STRAUSS DECEMBER 5, 2013, 5:12 PM EST
In response to Nelson Mandela's death on Thursday former President George W. Bush said the former South African president was one of the "great forces for freedom and equality of our time."
The statement came shortly after news broke that Mandela had died. Here's the statement:
"Laura and I join the people of South Africa and the world in celebrating the life of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. President Mandela was one of the great forces for freedom and equality of our time. He bore his burdens with dignity and grace, and our world is better off because of his example. This good man will be missed, but his contributions will live on forever. Laura and I send our heartfelt sympathy to President Mandelas family and to the citizens of the nation he loved."

(10,893 posts)but I'll give him props for having the class to at least offer condolences to Mandela. After looking at some of the comments on RWer sites about his death, I was very disappointed (but not much surprised) in what I read.

(375 posts)To some of the others, lighten up! You don't have to like George Bush too much (I certainly don't!) to give a little credit where credit is due.
