2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumEight days ago I said not to count Christie out - that he could rebound...
I take that back.
In eight days alot has happened that will pretty much sink his 2016 campaign. This includes one of the key figures in the bridge scandal wanting immunity to spill the beans, the fact that Christie used Sandy relief funds to create a high-priced campaign commercial meant to entice tourist to Jersey but in reality was to put Christie's face all over the TV right before his election. And now the fact that Christie admin was willing to holdback Sandy relief fund in order to get a mayor to buy into an unwanted project.
Christie could survive one of those scandals - he now has THREE. I'm starting to think there isn't much that can salvage any potential 2016 presidential run for Chris Christie.

(13,141 posts)indicating that he would NOT be running in 2016
(which she inferred from his emphasis on being
elected mayor for 8 years, not 4, and how he was
going to spend the rest of his life in New Jersey)
I had the distinct impression that he is expecting
to go down, in a big way. Something about his
body language and demeanor said to me he is
asking the people to be merciful and remember
how much he loved you.

(3,995 posts)Republicans look up to that sort of crap and even if they don't, they are always willing to ignore anything in exchange for one of their own. They think ego and entitlement are signs of strength.

(63,912 posts)A steady drumbeat. How long will it be before Christie's remaining staff jump like rats off a sinking ship? And I don't mean the ones with subpoenas, I mean the ones who aren't but who have jobs with him. It's gonna look like real poison on their resumes, not to mention the stress of working in an organization that is coming apart at the seams.

(1,035 posts)2014 would provide cover. Leave to go work on someone else's campaign. That is, if anyone is willing to hire someone from Christie's staff. In Republican circles, he and his staff have a reputation for being difficult. I'm not so sure a lot of the Christie team will land on their feet.

(24,096 posts)his not running for Prez is Nothing, for all the heartache and mayhem the bully caused. Hard to believe that he and his partners in crime thought they were invincible what with the horrendous stuff they pulled, basically in broad daylight.

(10,893 posts)earlier, but I still wonder if all the Democrats who supported him (like that one NJ mayor) are now having "voter's remorse" after all this news came out. Even before these scandals surfaced, I didn't get what many supposed Democrats saw in the guy. Besides cooperating with Obama that ONE time, what else is there? Nothing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election_in_New_Jersey,_2012#Results
3.6 million people voted in that election -Obama got 2.125 million of the votes or 58%
2013 NJ Governor Election:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_gubernatorial_election,_2013#Results_3
Only 2.120million people actually voted in this election. You know what that means? 5,000 more voters in NJ voted for Obama than showed up to vote for anyone for the 2013 NJ governor election. In fact Mitt Romney received 200k more votes than Chris Christie did. And btw this was 300k less voters than what came out for the 2009 Governor election in NJ. Probably because Christie held the special election to replace Frank Lautenberg 3 weeks earlier. He figured Cory Booker (D) would easily win that election and may draw more voters out to the election.
Personally I think the NJ election should be moved to an even year. But in the end what really is happening is that democrats are showing that they are unreliable voters. I think even if Christie's election was on a mid-term cycle he would have never been elected Governor.

(6,336 posts)Christie may or may not have gotten in there depending on the year.
If NJ's gov were in presidential years
Corzine would have been re-elected in 2008 and the Democrats would have made pickups in the legislature (my old LD would have been a likely pickup). Not sure what would have happened in 2012--- Corzine could not have run again (term limits) and the race would have been an open seat. How each candidate responded to Sandy would have been the be all end all.
The Democrats would have lost legislative seats in 2010 and we were better off having the leg elections in odd years. (2011 was a neutral year).
If NJ's gov were in midterm years
Corzine would have lost by more than he did in 2009 in the year of the teabagger and most likely have taken down legislative candidates and incumbents with him. NJ would have been one giant clusterfuck. I'm very thankful we did NOT have a statewide race that year.
