The Magistrate
(95,257 posts)There was at the time no appreciable difference between the arms possessed by regulars and those possessed by private persons; even artillery was available to any citizen who could afford a cannon.
Private possession of everything from battle-tanks to fighter jets is well within the original logic of the framers of the 2nd amendment....

(16,254 posts)Man, our framers of the 2nd amendment were SMART! They knew about fighter jets and all those battle tanks and everything way back then?
Truly amazing.
Are we talking about regular citizens calling for these laws, or are these extreme groups pushing this kind of legislation? Do they also have Stand Your Ground laws? It might be worth the move to watch some of these hot heads battle it out with their grenades and all that thar ammunition they've been hoarding for just such a day.
Popcorn supply! Check!
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)the notion that the state should have a monopoly on organized violence was a controversial one back then.
The Magistrate
(95,257 posts)The line you are trying is the equivalent of someone saying 'all they knew were muskets and such, they couldn't possibly have meant the kind of weapons we have now', and it is just as fallacious.
What was envisioned was that the weapons in the hands of the populace would be equivalent to those in the hands of a standing army. If the standing army has muskets, the people have muskets. If the standing army has machine-guns, then the principle would hold that the people, too, should possess them, and possess any other weapon employed by regular armed forces.
Whether this is wise policy of not is a separate question....

What next? Amend the laws to allow idiots like Ted Nugent to own the nuke?

(36,437 posts)I understand their logic completely, and they're right. There is no difference in kind of degree between what Lanza's mother could own without a problem and an RPG. None.
That the whole gunner shithead mentality is also insane and stupid beyond comprehension doesn't change the fact that they are being consistent here. This is gunner paradise: every asshole walking around with anti-tank weapons.
