New G.O.P. Bid to Limit Voting in Swing States.

Pivotal swing states under Republican control are embracing significant new electoral restrictions on registering and voting that go beyond the voter identification requirements that have caused fierce partisan brawls.

The bills, laws and administrative rules — some of them tried before — shake up fundamental components of state election systems, including the days and times polls are open and the locations where people vote.

Republicans in Ohio and Wisconsin this winter pushed through measures limiting the time polls are open, in particular cutting into weekend voting favored by low-income voters and blacks, who sometimes caravan from churches to polls on the Sunday before election.

Democrats in North Carolina are scrambling to fight back against the nation’s most restrictive voting laws, passed by Republicans there last year. The measures, taken together, sharply reduce the number of early voting days and establish rules that make it more difficult for people to register to vote, cast provisional ballots or, in a few cases, vote absentee.

Let's all do what we can to make sure these pathetic attempts to restrict voting FAIL BIG TIME. It all starts with education. Thanks again.

That is the one thing they understand - when women, young people and minorities vote, Democrats win! And yes, they are anti-education.

I think the blue states should pass a bill in their state that says, "voting can occur all year long at anytime you want to show up". That would really piss off the Republicans and show them it can work both ways.

The L.A. Times today had an article (front page) stating there will likely be no more Super Majority for the California Senate.
I can't help but think there is some big Koch-ass money pouring into destroying the Dems.
And it appears to be amping up now—and it's working.

This transparent tactic, dirty as it is, constitutes their biggest confession that they know that if elections are held fairly, they lose.

If they come up with their usual Foxsucker explanations for why this isn't so, just ask how many states led by Democrats are instituting restrictions of voting rights?

What are Republicans afraid of, anyway? Just the rest of America, that's all.

The stories I've seen haven't played up that angle, but it's something we should be reminding people about when the issue comes up.

I can't be the only DUer who has relatives who don't understand that there is no widespread voter fraud and that ID laws and other efforts are meant to suppress turnout, especially in Democratic-leaning areas and groups.

Back to the LWV: This is from last summer, and notice that they used the word "suppression."

http://www.lwv.org/blog/league-women-voters-north-carolina-files-suit-against-voter-suppression-law

On Monday, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed the most suppressive voting law in decades. The League of Women Voters of North Carolina (LWVNC) went straight to action, filing a federal lawsuit to challenge the voting restrictions as racially discriminatory and request that the state be placed back into preclearance under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

North Carolina’s new voting law is likely a bellwether of anti-voter legislation to come in other states following the Supreme Court's decision this past June striking down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. While much focus has been given to the law’s voter photo ID requirements, its voter restrictions unfortunately go much deeper.

In addition to requiring a government-issued photo ID to vote, the law:

Shortens weekday early voting periods;
Eliminates early voting on Sundays;
Eliminates pre-registration for high school students;
Eliminates same day registration during early voting.

votes all by ourselves ...especially the 18-29 year olds who consider themselves "independent" but overwhelmingly lean toward Democrats.

The youth vote fell by 60% from 2008 - 2010.
