AUSTIN (AP) State Sen. Dan Patrick has defeated three-term incumbent David Dewhurst for the Republican nomination for Texas lieutenant governor.
Speaking to supporters Tuesday night, Patrick said the people of Texas had given him a "mandate," and he offered special thanks to his tea party supporters.
"Welcome to the grass roots of the Republican Party!" he said. "Tea party folks love America; and they love the Constitution; and they love free markets; and they love the Second Amendment; and they love Texas; and they love the liberty that was granted to them by God, and not government."

(28,256 posts)He ran an AM right-wing hate radio station in Houston for many years, and the daily content of that station was mind-numbing in its perverse toxicity. I heard Patrick say on-air that he would like to see the U.S. run as a theocracy rather than a democracy. I hope that Texas Democrats---without the help of the national party, as usual---can keep Patrick from rising any higher in the state hierarchy; the damage he is capable of inflicting is a frightening thing to contemplate.
