The battle for the Republican nomination of the Senate seat held by long-term incumbent Thad Cochran has been interesting, to say the least. The stakes soared even higher after newcomer David Bratt upset House Majority Whip Eric Cantor in the Virginia Republican primary a couple of weeks ago. . .
Cochran, for his sake, is having to truly campaign for the first time in 30 or so years. The result of the primary, I think, was a loud wake-up call for his campaign managers, if not for himself. He was even at a campaign stop in Wesson on Tuesday.
On the sidelines, for now, sits Travis Childers, who quietly earned the Democratic nomination on June 4. Childers is no stranger to politics, having served as Mississippis First District representative from 2008 to 2011. He knows how the game is played.
And, the way the two Republicans have been beating up each other the past few daysand dragging supporters through the filthChilders, right now, finds himself sitting pretty for the November general election.

(95,337 posts)I think running against Obamacare would hurt someone. Across the country Americans are realizing that Obamacare has been improving the life of millions by providing quality, affordable healthcare.
But for some of these southern Democrats I do see them supporting wedge issues like pro-gun, anti-abortion stances.

(130,895 posts)He's had Democratic positions for some time, NO REASON to do anything but encourage this possibility.
Served as the U.S. Representative for Mississippi's 1st congressional district from 2008 to 2011. The district included much of the northern portion of the state including New Albany, Columbus, Oxford, Southaven, and Tupelo. A member of the Democratic Party,[1] Childers previously served as Chancery Clerk of Prentiss County from 1992 until his election to Congress. On March 1, 2014, Childers announced that he is running for the United States Senate.[2] He won his party's nomination for the Senate seat in the Democratic primary on June 3.[3]

(95,337 posts)I'd love to see Childers win but in the end we need to cross our fingers that the Tea Party idiot says some pretty stupid things to make him come across as unelectable.
