New poll shows Corbett gaining in Pa. gov race

Endangered Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) appears to be closing the gap with Democratic opponent Tom Wolf, according to a new Magellan Strategies poll conducted for the news website The Keystone Report and released Tuesday.

Corbett has pulled to within 12 percentage points among likely voters, the Magellan survey found. Wolf, a York County businessman, had the support of 50 percent, to 38 percent for the governor. The rest were undecided.

In an earlier series of independent polls taken from late May through June, Corbett was trailing Wolf by an average of 21.7 percentage points.

The new poll comes after a steady barrage of attack ads from the Corbett camp.

Magellan’s findings were in line with a New York Times/CBS poll last week, which found Wolf holding a 9-point lead. The latter survey was conducted on the Internet over 21 days, however, a methodology that many pollsters say is problematic, in part because it excludes people who are not online.

If the democrats can't win this race to this guy they are a sorry ass party and there needs to be a serious overhaul of the top leadership. To be honest Dean needs to be the DNC Chairman again but as long as Obama is President that's not happening.

PA is SLIGHTLY democratic leaning state at large, but still has a strong republican core and sadly, democrats on the margins just are not attentive enough to tune into non-presidential elections.

That said, absolutely right that it will be a serious tragedy if this guy gets reelected. There is a BIG, BIG chunk of the republican base, Penn Staters that won't vote for him because he has been wrong in every possible way over the Sandusky situation and the firing of Joe Paterno ...

Selling out to fracking, for profit education, completely gaffing on the lottery system ... All of that would not matter, but being the person who drove the firing of Joe Paterno, now THAT matters ...

This is a GOP state. Teabaggers control the State House, State Senate, Governor, 13/18 US House seats and 1 US Senate seat.

1) It's only natural that a bunch of Republicans who don't like Corbett are going to vote for him anyway. I don't see internals or trendlines anywhere in the poll, but I suspect this is where the biggest chunk by far of Corbett's comeback is from. A large group of PA republicans have said in previous polls that Corbett doesn't deserve reelection.

2) Corbett is definitely outspending Wolf right now, negative attacks are all he has to win. A lot of Republicans are still very disappointed and pissed off at him for all his failures, his dropping lawsuits over gay marriage/PA's voter ID law, and him raising taxes in a highway/infrastructure funding bill. I've read stories of multiple republicans in PA news that worked for Corbett in 2010, but won't be working for him this time around.

3) Personally, I've always been nervous about Wolf having been a complete unknown before this election, and winning the primary with tons of his own money he spent. Wolf isn't against an underfunded opponent this time around who can't afford to counter him on the air, which mean's Wolf's #1 strength from the primary is gone in the general election.

I was surprised he won the primary to be honest ...

You are right, there will absolutely be up until now Corbett disaffected Rs coming home.

One problem he has is that he is so stunningly arrogant, I know a number of republican state senators and house people who just hate the guy. There is always some tension, but he is on another level there. So, there will not be the same unity and support to fight the evil liberal as normal.

But, the number one thing that makes this a tough go for him is Penn State. A VERY strong republican fan base for the most part, and there are a LOT of dead red voters who just will not vote for him because of the Sandusky thing in general, but particularly because he drove the firing of JoPa.
