Related: About this forumand say the Dems lose the Senate, but pick up governorships.....
is that ANY kinda of a trade off?? or not. Just curious.

(6,374 posts)Governors elected in 2014 will have to be re-elected in 2018 to have an impact on representative districts post 2020 census. The Senate, were it to turn Republican, could start adversely impacting the country the day their sworn in. By the time we get to the 2022 elections with a hypothetically better distribution of house districts - many issues may be beyond recovery.
So - GOTV. Hold the Senate. Dem the House. Likely ? I don't know but a man can dream, can't he.

(29,686 posts)Just threw it out there. We've got to keep the Senate and pick up Governorships as well.

(2,097 posts)It's hard to imagine what the GOP gaining the Senate actually gets them, given that we have the White House and they won't have a veto-proof majority. In fact, it could well backfire on them, since now the whole of Congress will be passing the batshit-crazy GOP legislation the Senate usually blocks -- thus further exposing GOP batshit-craziness.
Plus it won't last long. A GOP majority is unlikely to be better than 52-48 (Nate Silver's putting it at about 51-49 at the moment), and 2016 will be 2014 in reverse: 2/3 of the seats up are GOP seats, including many freshman 2010-wave senators. Plus it's a presidential year, so our base will turn out. We'll get it back in 2016.
S yeah; the Senate in exchange for governors' mansions? I'd rather have both, but it's not a terrible deal.

(3,500 posts)it might be a good trade. The Gerrymandering the Repubs have done in some states is a crime. If Dems can get hold of the states and draw them more fairly then in the long run the Repubs will have a more difficult time in congress. In my home state of PA the Repubs hold 13 of 18 Congressional seats with Dems outnumbering Repubs in registration.
I don't think anyone can accurately predict what is going to happen in the next several months. The only thing I'd add is most people are fed up with politicians in general (but can't seem to vote them out of office).

(2,097 posts)even if they can't hold out, isn't it mostly up to governors to decide on Medicare expansion under the ACA? If so, that alone would be worth it.

(14,566 posts)Any Supreme Court picks would be an even greater circus than what they would be with a Dem controlled senate.
Not that anything is getting done now, but they would put all kinds of crazy ass things on the POTUS desk and force him to not sign them, and god knows whatever crap they would pull with him.
Right now, the stupidity is contained to the House, where stupidity is pretty much the norm ...

(5,754 posts)Can the Senate refuse to vote on Supreme Court nominees? For how long? Forever? Leaving the court with fewer and fewer members as time goes on?

(14,308 posts)Pennsylvania is a big one. Worth a few congressional seats in redistricting.
Win Maine's governorship -- not much since only two congressmen.
