Related: About this forumSaying you're for freedom/liberty is meaningless, like most things Tea Partiers say.
There is positive freedom, which gives people the freedom to do as they like, and negative freedom, which is freedom from things. These two types of liberties are in constant conflict with each other.
Take religious liberty, for example. American Christians want it both ways. They want their freedom of religion, which is often interpreted as being able to impose their religion on others, and the freedom from the religious or irreligious beliefs of others, a freedom they refuse to extend to others. So as both a positive freedom and negative freedom, when it comes to religious freedom all others can go screw.
Take the issue of gun control. Fine, people have the positive freedom to bear arms. But Americans also should have the freedom from having to worry about being gunned down if they leave their homes - the negative side. There must be a middle way.
This bullshit line from the parrots on the right that they are for freedom and that Democrats and Obama hate America and are against freedom is one of the most insipid things they repeat over and over again. And that is saying a lot seeing as they say a lot of insipid things.

(107 posts)Freedom vs. domination is one of the many inherent contradictions of capitalism.
When tea baggers say that Iraqis should want freedom, the baggers really mean that Iraqis ought to be willing to submit to American domination. Teabaggers mostly speak in code that must be translated for outsiders to understand their rants.
