Related: About this forumIntro Democratic Congressional Candidate Kelly Westlund
Hey everyone -- Im Kelly Westlund, the Progressive Democrat running to unseat Tea Partier Sean Duffy in Wisconsins 7th Congressional District. I support increasing the minimum wage and expanding opportunity so that anyone can succeed based on talent and merit, not their family net worth or their ability to exploit tax loopholes. I would love to hear what issues are important to you!

(70,162 posts)i started talking about my farm, and hugelkultur, and i was shuttled off by someone who seemed to know it was too long of a conversation.
so, i want to know about the soil conservation work you have done. i suspect from the bit of talking that i managed to do that it is a lot like what i am doing, just not calling it huglekultur.
so, talk a little more dirt, please.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hügelkultur
also want to talk about small farms. we have enough corn and soybeans, but we have to import or truck everything else. farmers markets are booming in chicago. yet farmers are still being squeezed out of business.
tell us about the small farmers you would represent, and what you feel they need.
and welcome to du.
everybody please k&r for this terrific candidate.
lets help her take back wisconsin.

(60,364 posts)My big issueis that large slice o blue on this chart:
The United States has been developing some remarkably lousy weapons and weapons systems over the past 10 ~ 15 years.
The most ridiculously expensive weapons currently being developed:
F-35 program: 14 years in the making and this thing burns up on the runway, can't fly in the dark, no range to speak of and the pilot's 'God-view' requires a $500 grand helmet. Touted as a $78 million dollar wonder, the cheapest one is $148 million and rising.
USS Gerald R Ford (aircraft carrier): $16 ~ $40 billion dollars
Virginia-class submarine: $7 ~ $9 billion dollars
Zumwalt-class destroyer: (at least) $5.6 billion dollars

(70,162 posts)kelly is from a military family, and should have a good answer to this.
btw, kelly will be hanging out tomorrow (i think is the plan), so if there is another thread going for that, be sure to show up.
kellywestlund
(44 posts)I am from a military family, so this a topic that is near and dear to my heart. We need to take a serious look at our military budget and cut unnecessary spending, but we must ensure that we can still provide our troops with all the resources necessary. We need to make sure that we keep the promises made to our service members and veterans.
unhappycamper
(60,364 posts)One question about your reply: "but we must ensure that we can still provide our troops with all the resources necessary."
Are you suggesting that we keep building this very expensive hardware? Are there any particular DoD programs (F-35, Zumwalt-class destroyers, Littoral Combat Ships, Ford-class aircraft carriers, etc. etc. etc.) you think should be rethought?
FYI, I've been posting about this stuff in in our NSD Forum: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1178
kellywestlund
(44 posts)It is unacceptable to ever send our troops into harm's way without a damn good reason for it, and in those circumstances, we must ensure that we provide our troops with the resources they need to come home quickly and safely.
I agree that we absolutely need to take a serious look at our military budget and re-prioritize spending that isn't critical to national defense. We have nation building to do here at home and that money would be well spent caring for our veterans, investing in education, and rebuilding our infrastructure.

(44 posts)Last fall, polls showed Duffy would lose by 3 points in the district as it's drawn today, 4 if people are aware of his role in the government shutdown. We're hard at work with our ground game, and we have a lot to show for it.

Corey_Baker08
(2,157 posts)Welcome. I am sure you will get plenty of advice and opinions here on DU. Maybe Even Increase Your Fund-raising.
My name is Corey Baker and I am a 25 year old Democrat and I have worked on several campaigns on the local, state, and even the federal level. I discovered Democratic Underground during the 2004 Democratic Nominee elections. I was 14 years old when I joined this site, and it has been a great place, with great people sharing their information, their opinions, and alot of news not covered by the mainstream media.
I've literally grew up on DU and what I have learned is something I never would have learned in a text book or in a history book. While lately there has been some hostility anytime Hillary Clinton or Elizabeth Warren's name gets mentioned. Its nothing personal but we are soo focused on the 2014 elections, and doing all we can to ensure democratic voters turnout, and we keep a Majority in the US Senate, gain some Democratic Governorships, & yes maybe even pick up a few seats in the House of Representatives.
The DU community members are extremely passionate about the causes & the candidates that we fight so hard to advance and elect...
We are honored to have you become a member of the DU community!
Thanks
Corey

(17,087 posts)And best of luck in your campaign! I think it's a great idea for you to introduce yourself here. DU is a true diverse grass root community of passionate people advancing progressive causes. I think you will find it a great resource of ideas and information. We argue a lot, hotly and loudly sometimes, but when you get to Washington, you'll find the thick skin you grew here useful, I think, and will have been exposed to, and in command of the topic at hand.
As you have already seen, you will get some useful local support, and some good sounding boards on national topics, as you represent all of us in D.C. I have found unhappycamper to be a reliable presenter of defense issues, especially systems procurement, and follow his posts closely. I just drove from Colorado to Ohio and back this week, and can only dream of the money that could be better used on the interstates of Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, where the current plan is posting "rough road" signs every three miles, by the savings from the cancellation of the F-35 program alone. Kansas City and St. Louis could use a hand, too.
There are many others here who I think you will find helpful, as well, and many things to discuss. Enjoy your time here, and if you need anything, just ask!

(11,833 posts)Raising the minimum wage, closing large corporate tax loopholes, strengthening the working poor and middle class and strengthening public education are all extremely important to me. I'm a believer that our economy should benefit the workers. No one who works 40 hours a week should live below the poverty line. I also believe in singer payer health care and eventually full health coverage for all - we should reduce our military spending (not the people, but on the hardware).
I like your web site. http://www.kellywestlund.com/ Especially your involvement with sustainability.
Thank you for listening. Good luck in Wisconsin. It's a great State!
