Alaska - Candidates meet to discuss possibility of Walker-Mallott ticket (governor)

Politics is never usual in Alaska. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this, but if we get Sean Parnell out of the governor's mansion - by whatever means - it can only be good.

Democrat Byron Mallott and independent Bill Walker have been meeting since midweek to discuss whether they should merge their gubernatorial campaigns into a bipartisan or nonpartisan unity ticket.

The talks between the candidates and their inner circles are expected to continue through the Labor Day weekend as the Sept. 2 deadline for changes to the November ballot approaches. With recent polling suggesting Republican Gov. Sean Parnell would win a three-way race but face a much tougher challenge against a single candidate, Democrats and Republicans who oppose Parnell have been pushing for months to get Mallott and Walker to join forces.

"Talks are continuing between the Walker and Mallott teams to create a unified ticket and there will be a formal press availability on Tuesday,” said Laury Scandling, spokeswoman for the Mallott campaign. She said that would be the only official statement either side was making Sunday afternoon.

Tom Begich, a high-level Democratic Party volunteer who has been trying to work a Walker-Mallott merger, said Sunday that no deal had yet emerged, but he was hopeful that the two candidates, and each of their candidates for lieutenant governor, could produce a combined ticket by the deadline. He said Walker and Mallott had been meeting since before their debate Thursday in Kodiak on fishing issues.

Walker is that rarest of commodities, a moderate Republican (although he is pro-life), and given that the Mallott seems to be running behind in the polls and Parnell would undoubtedly win a three-way race, this may be the best we can hope for.

to support the so-called Unity ticket, with Republican-turned-independent Bill Walker running as governor and Democrat Byron Mallott running as lieutenant governor. With a three-way race and Walker leading Mallott in polls, it seemed that this was the best way to defeat the horrible Sean Parnell and his even more horrible lt. Governor nominee, Anchorage mayor Dan Sullivan. Speculation is that the former democratic nom for lt. gov, Hollis French, who is awesome, will become Attorney General if the unity ticket wins.

I'm not totally happy with this turn of events, but Walker IS moderate and has given assurances that he won't pursue social issues. He is in favor of expanding Medicaid, which Parnell has adamantly opposed. It's not much, but it is a slight move to the left for Alaska, and that is a good thing.

Byron Mallott is Alaska Native and as lt. gov. would be in charge of elections. This is good news as he will assure fairness for rural Alaskans, something that the current administration has not been at all interested in.

Walker-Mallott will be a strong force against the continuing colonization of Alaska by Big Oil, also a good thing.

So I have mixed emotions tonight, but this is it.
