2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOne other thing should be be pointed out about the nearly impossible row Obama has had to hoe.
Not only did he face an oppositional House of Reps, he also was cursed with the worst Senate majority leader in history.
Watch closely on Jan 20, Harry.
As big a jerk-off as he is, Mitch McConnell will show you that all you need to eliminate the filibuster is a litlle bitty teensy set of balls.
Then POOF .... It's gone
Thank all of you Dem candidates for running away from the Prez and the truth. Now WE get to pay for your amazing cowardice for the past 6 years.
The ONLY thing we have left to save us at this stage of the game is just what we started with.......HOPE

(1,850 posts)In the November 4, 2008 elections, the Democratic Party increased its majorities in both chambers, giving President Obama a Democratic majority in the legislature for the first two years of his presidency. A new delegate seat was created for the Northern Mariana Islands.[5] This Congress has been considered one of the most productive Congresses in history in terms of legislation passed since Lyndon Johnson's Great Society and the 89th Congress.[6][7][8][9]
From the time Senator Franken won his recount in June 2009 until Scotty Brown was elected in December 2009, Obama had a filibuster-proof Senate.
And, in case you don't remember Majority Leader Reid DID eliminate the filibuster.

(21,755 posts)Reid only eliminated the filibuster regarding appointments. Just look at what happened to legislation like the jobs act, veteran''s benefits, and you know as well as I that the list goes on, and on, and one, and .

(666 posts)Yeah, and the Dems should have passed more legislation in that little time period (super majority) to include taxes, unemployment benefits expiring, and infrastructure in addition to the AFA. They would never have gotten that without the super majority.

(27,787 posts)To understand why all the things you listed didn't happen, its important to know the answer to my question.
Filibuster Harry
(666 posts)sick, Byrd was in bad health, and Al Franken didn't get to the senate until June. So the general period was from say June 1st but I think it was later than that until like Dec 10th. Kindly refresh my memory to the exact dates.

(27,787 posts)You have the time period until Franken was seated, Byrd's illness, Kennedy dies, then days the Senate was out of session, then the special election.
I'm on my phone right now, but there is an article that breaks down the entire period almost day by day.
So when folks use the "2 years" line, that's over 700 days, so it's off by 10x.
Filibuster Harry
(666 posts)that Minnesota only had 1 Senator representing them until June. And of course most also forget about Senator Byrd's illness.
