The Democrats would be wise to follow Obama's lead and seize the mantle of net neutrality. It's an issue that should appeal strongly to every small-business loving, blog loving, shopping love, and porn loving American.
And so many conservatives like Rand Paul and Ted Cruz are on record being on the side of the telecoms and cable co's that oppose net neutrality. It's also a wedge issue, with groups like the Christian Coalition supporting net neutrality. Further, it has the support of many major businesses and nonpartisan business publications as well. Lastly, it has the support of most if not all web activists.
If Hillary or any Democrat wants to win, they should learn about the issue, figure out how to articulate it clearly, and take a strong position on it. Our president has given the Democrats a very powerful issue that I think appeals to independents and young people. It can be presented that net neutrality protects our right to decide for ourselves what our internet experience is. Without net neutrality, either big business or the government will decide.
As an example, without net neutrality, Democratic Underground would have to pay service providers a fee in order to have their website downloaded (or downloaded reasonably quickly) to our computers.
Do the Democrats have the intelligence to seize this issue before some smart Republicans do?
