Republicans weigh government shutdown to stop Obama on immigration

WASHINGTON Sun Nov 16, 2014 1:37pm EST

(Reuters) - One Republican leader on Sunday held open the possibility that his party could move to shut down the government in an attempt to stop President Barack Obama from taking executive action on immigration policy.

A vocal group of conservatives in the House of Representatives is pressing to use government funding as leverage to prevent any White House moves that would allow millions of undocumented immigrants to stay and work in the United States.

Several Republicans, including some in leadership, have said they were trying to find alternatives that would stop short of directly threatening a government shutdown, and Republican lawmakers on Sunday talk shows acknowledged that the shutdown threat was a less than ideal approach.

"It doesn't solve the problem. But look, we're having those discussions... We're going to continue to meet about this. I know the House leaders are talking about, the Senate leaders are talking about it," said South Dakota Republican John Thune, who chairs the Senate Republican Conference, on "Fox News Sunday".

Same old shit.

Government shutdowns that squander billions of dollars
Long, pointless investigations that squander billions
Impeachment efforts that squander billions.

There's nothing like "cutting down on government waste" the G.O.P. way.

They take the function of the US gov't so lightly that completely stopping it, putting everything & everyone else our gov't functions for aside, without a thought, because they either just refuse or have zero will or intellect to negotiate nor compromise, is beyond appalling

A decision that should never be taken as lightly as the GOP seems to.

First biggee,Wall Street can't take the hit. Several of the Big Banks are short of their required cash reserves and any disruption will cause failure of one or more. Second,Americans will finally wake up to this bunch of double speak idiots. This might be what the Rethugs are counting on in order to capture the White House in 2016,Newt tried this tactic and it blew up in his face, and all of a sudden old Newtie is making noise again. Did anyone notice who is all quite,McGrumpy and Little Lindsey.

the more likely that blame for it will stick. Also, it's not a guarantee that the blame will not accrue to the President, especially since it's widely viewed that the election earlier this month was a repudiation of the President and his policies.

My bet is that unless the immigration-oriented executive orders are extremely limited in scope, perhaps affecting only a million immigrants or less, the GOP will toss the dice on a government shutdown. They solidly believe they can blame Barack Obama for it by calling him a dictator, and if they're wrong, they have a lot of time to go before the 2016 elections. The political memories of the mushy middle are collectively quite short.
