2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis man is going to judge on the health and weight of another man???!!!
Sorry, you know the old adage - those who live in glass houses.
And yes, I know I am also overweight, but then again I didn't say it was okay for a man to be choked to death by a police officer because the man in question was overweight and would have died anyways of heart disease. Besides I've also lost 50lbs as of today since summertime

(15,805 posts)to understand that Garner's weight affected his health. Even under normal conditions, overweight people cannot be placed in a face down position because that results in "positional asphyxia" -- they simply cannot expand their chest enough to breathe. Compound this with the illegal choke hold, plus the weight of 4-5 additional men piling on top of him, and he was doomed from the start.
While Garner's disability was obvious, what about other people with not so apparent disabilities like heart disease and respiratory conditions that would put their lives at risk under similar circumstances? There are means to peacefully solve conflicts that do not involve containment via unnecessary brutal, overwhelming physical force. Police need better training so they can employ other means to safely deal with people besides just these conventional and dangerously aggressive and outdated "swarming tactics".

(39,451 posts)that they were dealing with a man that may have a medical condition either causing his weight (thyroid;medications) or caused by his weight.
To use Garner's weight to defend the cop is ludicrous! If anything it makes the cops look worse.
They either didn't care or they are just a bunch of brainless assholes.
I think it's a little of both.
