Little recourse seen for Democrats on Social Security rule change

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats appear to have little recourse against a House of Representatives rule change that could prompt a steep cut to Social Security disability benefits next year, congressional aides said on Monday.

The new legislative rule, pushed through with little notice last week, would prohibit a routine transfer to the Social Security Disability Trust Fund, which is expected to be depleted by late 2016.

Without an injection from the main Social Security retirement fund, the disability program would have to cut benefits by some 20 percent, only paying out what it can collect from payroll taxes.

Congress approved the last such "reallocation" transfer in 1994 after several in the 1980s under President Ronald Reagan.

Republicans say they passed the rule change to force reforms to the disability program, which they claim is rife with fraud and mismanagement. Democrats, unable to stop the shift, have called it a "stealth" move to cut benefits.

We know that red staters are "takers" and I think most of it comes in a form of disability payments. So let's see how they'd like them Republicans. Oh, forgot, they will blame this on Obama.

Democrats can not stop it because a majority of those who vote elected Republicans. Buying ad time is not a solution. Republicans don't give a shit about public opinion because their voters don't give a shit.

seem too comfortable with.

Look at the republicans, when they lost in 2008, did that stop them from attacking everyday?

It is way past due that the Democrats actually show some backbone.

A perfect example is Elizabeth Warren. She is a fighter, and if more Democrats took her example people would start paying attention

So which mega rich donors do we hit up to pay for that.

Back in the 80's Conservatives sat up their own media. Fox is only one small piece of that. There is no left wing media, not even MSNBC.

So what you are talking about would be gigantically expensive, and that money has to come from somewhere.

I am one who can be affected.I am on SSI.

I live in red state Missouri and I vote for dems for all the good it does even in 2010 and 2014.

Before people jump on Obama can't wait to cut it let's remember back in 2011 SSI was one of those protected from automatic cuts
from sequester deal.

I hope that you will contact your representatives - yes, even the Republicans one. After all, they claim that, once won, they represent all the people in their district and state.

And just alert them that you are worried. Perhaps someone will at least reply. Mine do not. Democrats and Republican.

Even though Republicans in the House did this, Obama will get the blame for it. We'll hear the old tried and true, "Obama wants to send people to FEMA Camps and kill people" from the fucking loon right-wing.

who are on social security disability that are going to be in for a rude awaking if this rule change goes into effect. My problem with this is that disabled people that draw SSD draw it off their work record. So will the next chip at social security be the retirement benefit that we all contribute to?

This should be attacked now, every time a Democrat stands before a microphone, and with whatever resources we can use to buy air time. Even if the topic of the hour is something totally disconnected with, every Democratic leader should circle back to this and stay on it like a dog with a bone.
That's how Republicans set agendas and frame public discourse. This strategy is the only thing that has kept them going belly up, even when we think we have them on the run. For them, the next campaign begins as soon as the last one ends.
It is called playing offense. We need to start doing it.

Remember when the Republicans got Obama to extend the Bush tax cuts for two years by threatening not to extend unemployment benefits during the depths of the great recession? It's called hostage taking.

Now the IRS will be unable to answer calls and to process returns in a timely manner. Its budget has been cut because of the... teabaggers complaining that their PACs were scrutinized and the Republicans did not get to tar and feather Lois Lerner.
