Perry: 'Senators talk' but governors rule

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) says that governors are much better suited for the presidency than senators a useful argument for him to make as he looks to position himself for a potential 2016 bid against a field likely to include several senators.

IIRC, the governor of Texas doesn't have a lot of power, it's more of a bully pulpit. Demit Feb 2015 #2

The Lieutenant Governor actually has more power. Maybe someone from Texas can confirm if that's correct? So Perry is overstating his, uh, CEO-ness a bit. I like how he's trash-talking Ted Cruz though, lol.

Perry's really good at executing people, though. Gotta give him that.

"Under Texas law, however, the governor only has power to commute the sentence if the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles first recommends commutation or pardon..."

"Compared to the governors of other U.S. states, the governorship of Texas is a fairly weak office. The Lieutenant Governor of Texas, who presides over the state Senate, is considered a more powerful political figure, being able to exercise greater personal prerogatives."
