2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWho are your two senators in the U.S. Senate and are you proud of them or ashamed?
I have Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, and they are pretty awesome. How about yours?
Mass
(27,315 posts)Pretty awesome too
Pretty happy...

(17,997 posts)Senator Mark Kirk - not so much. However, I will say as far as Republicans go, he's not the worst
3catwoman3
(24,041 posts)Mark Kirk occasionally does the right thing, but I never know when that will be.
marym625
(17,997 posts)But I would rather that than a predictable Republican.
How did the MMR immunizations go? Did more prior naysayers come in and have their children vaccinated?
3catwoman3
(24,041 posts)...as a number of families opting to get an MMR before 12 months, knowing that 2 will still be needed at the usual intervals.
I live in the far northwest burbs of Chicago. How about you?
marym625
(17,997 posts)Thank you.
Northside. Just a little north of Wrigleyville.
There's a few of us around. When it warms up, we should do a DU get together!

(17,997 posts)But I am useless in the winter. When it warms up!

(42,641 posts)His verbal takedown of James Inhofe should be on every news channel. Really no contest though.
Kirk is a phony who tries to come across as more moderate than he is, but underneath his tailored shoes are Joni Ernst style breadbags.
Richard Durbin has lost some of his fire over the years but still a good Senator.

(613 posts)Mark Kirk will become a lobbyist.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)2016 should have a better turnout given the Presidential election. I know very little about Ms. Duckworth's positions. I could also see Lisa Madigan running. She has name recognition, is popular and might provide a challenge to other potential candidates. Might be the real reason she did not take on Quinn.
NPolitics1979
(613 posts)She would have defeated Giannoulias and Hoffman in the Democratic primary and would have defeated Kirk in the November General Election.
Kirk could end up Fitzgerald.
Regarding 2016. What if Kwame Raoul gets the Democratic nomination.
Cooley Hurd
(26,877 posts)I like them both, especially Sen Gillibrand!
madamesilverspurs
(15,806 posts)Michael Bennet.
The other seat is now occupied by oil whore Cory Gardner. Last November, Colorado lost a senator (Mark Udall), the Koch's gained one.
NPolitics1979
(613 posts)Boxer instead of Feinstein. Bennet's ideology and voting record is like Feinstein's.
Agnosticsherbet
(11,619 posts)I like them both, though I think Boxer is a shade the better Senator.

(11,417 posts)We need to work for Kamala Harris to replace Boxer I think.

And then there's my slimy rep, Flores.

(1,044 posts)Proud, because they both get it. Franken is more liberal, but Klobuchar supports the middle class.

(28,394 posts)Toomey is an empty suit. Casey is a conserve-dem, but I think he is a conscientious senator. He's frequently on the local news regarding some issue or other. Toomey is the invisible man and we need to defeat him in 2016.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)Casey has always been strong when it comes to issues regarding Education and Labor - very pro-union. He worked hard with the healthcare reform and always a supporter of working class families. I know people see his stance on Abortions and slap the 'conservative' label on him but at least with Casey's abortion stance - he actually cares about the fetus once it is born. I would actually say Casey is one of the few people out there I would actually call pro-life.
I know there will be people who for whatever reason are against abortion but if they can fight to make things better for working class families, the 99%, I might give someone a pass on that issue. And a few times Casey has said there are enough laws out there regulating Abortion.
femmocrat
(28,394 posts)He is mostly a solid progressive. He is pro-life and pro-second amendment though. I respect that his stance on abortion is due to his religious beliefs. He has been excellent on health care and public education.
Here is a comprehensive summary of his positions: http://www.ontheissues.org/senate/Bob_Casey.htm
Corey_Baker08
(2,157 posts)Senator Brown is an excellent public servant who has served Ohio & The Democratic Party as a model as to what A Democrat & A Senator is supposed to do & be!
I have no doubt that Senator Brown has a very bright future ahead of him & I wouldn't be surprised if he is tapped to be the Democratic Nominee for Vice-President in 2016!
I am not a fan of Rob Portman, however I admire his courage for standing with his son when he announced publicly that he is a proud gay American & Senator Portman said his view on homosexuality & same sex marriage has evolved.
However I am so excited about For Democratic Governor Ted Strickland challenging him & I am optimistic that Ohio will have 2 Democratic Senators representing us in Washington...
justhanginon
(3,290 posts)when I write letters to his office I usually get back a pretty decent response that speaks to the issues I might raise. That is appreciated. Sen. Kirk I do not care for, I think he is just another right winger but clothed in somewhat semi moderate rhetoric which belies his voting record.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)I can't stand either one of them. Lisa is a two-faced word I can't say here, and Ohio Dan is a Koch-sucker.

(28,749 posts)I'm not sure I blame her specifically.
shopgirl
(23 posts)I have a good friend who is close to Martha Coakley and even she had to admit that Martha is not great on the campaign trail. I think she was a good public servant and would have made a fine governor, but she just has never connected with voters. Sometimes charisma is overrated ...

(95,337 posts)I adore Chris Coons. One of the best guys in the senate and so glad he is representing us although it's by pure luck we even got him as senator. He was the only one willing to run against long-time US Represenative Mike Castle, the very popular republican representative here Delaware (one of the few likable republicans) and whom everyone assumed would easily win the senate seat. This was for the open seat left behind when Biden became VP. Of course as you know back in 2010 Castle got upset in the primaries by Christine 'I am not a Witch' O'Donnell. That's what happens with closed primaries - open primaries the independants would have showed up and saved Castle. Coon easily won that election and re-election in 2014.
Carper is a bit more moderate for my taste and seems to be unbeatable in the primaries. But I think he is retiring soon so hopefully we can get another guy like Chris Coons in that second seat and perhaps one day Beau Biden (although Beau says he wants to be Governor).
NPolitics1979
(613 posts)Jack Markell or John Carney.
If Carper were to retire in 2024- he could be replaced by Beau Biden- who will finish two terms as Governor.

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,437 posts)I detest Coats, a formerly retired retread who was brought back to life as a ringer in 2010. I tolerate Donnelly, who is a Bayh-like Blue Dog Dem (which is pretty much the only type that can get elected here in Indiana and, frankly, he got a bit lucky when Richard Mourdock took down Richard Lugar and then killed his campaign with stupid rape remarks). Indiana politics have sucked for awhile now. They've held the governor ship for a decade now and the Dems have been driven to extinction in the legislature and the one major statewide office we won in 2012, the State Superintendent office, has been effectively neutered by Pence and the Republican-dominated legislature. I live in Indy, which is a fairly progressive bastion of light in an otherwise rural and rich Republican-controlled state.
