Republican Party too 'wacko' to still be considered mainstream (Irish Times)

The Irish Times - Saturday, May 26, 2012
LARA MARLOWE

... THE REPUBLICAN presidential candidate Mitt Romney embraces the idea that climate change is a hoax.

His immigration policy is so extreme it’s been endorsed by Russell Pearce and Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the architects of Arizona’s law.

Allen West, a Republican representative from Florida, accused up to to 81 Democratic congressmen of being members of the Communist party. No one called him on it.

At a Republican primary debate last year, the audience cheered for the idea that an unemployed man who loses his medical insurance should be allowed to die ...

they're losing with almost every single demographic. And now they're only way to win is to root for lower turnout among Dems. They can't win any national election fair and square.

and it rightly places the blame for Republican tribal politics on Gingrich and Norquist.

When Speaker of the House, Gingrich expressed his strong desire for a parliamentary approach to government. And Norquist established the primary litmus test for Republican politicians.

The dysfunction we see today is the fruit of their efforts.

understand why people are allowed to run riot with constant negativity on this board. The choices are clear, there's Obama, and there's Romney. One of them will be sworn in on January 20th. It won't be Gary Johnson. It won't be Rocky Anderson. And it certainly won't be Ralph Nader.

If Pres. Obama does nothing but sit in the Oval Office for four years, wielding his mighty veto pen, I'll be happy, because the thought of a Romney WH, and Repuke majorities in both houses of Congress should scare the living shit out of anyone with half a brain. If the worst does actually happen, we'll all be Wisconsin.

And these people have the potential to be very, very dangerous if put into a position to act that way. Hitler didn't just start gassing people overnight, it built up in small steps, and I see the far right wing going down the same path if no one checks their power.

will become of the country. They are not going away and they are not going to come to their senses anytime soon. How long can we survive when somewhere between 30% to 40% of the population are not only politically insane - they are literally a fifth column of the insane? How much longer can this house divided against itself remain standing?
