(13,616 posts)he would have been killed by half the people that voted for him. No, talking like a white person woudl not help, because as recently as 1983 had the 1/16 law on the books, what is that, you ask? It means that even if you look paler than a Viking, and speak better english than Queen Elizabeth, if you had 1/16 of Black Blood, you had to register as black, because the Americans wanted to destroy Croele culture. Keep in mind, many classical musicans were creole, and when they got their status changed, they wound up playing the sort of brothels that birthed Jazz.

(9,474 posts)He's Indian, as in, his ancestors were from India. Having said that, you're right about the bigotry and racism. He wouldn't have been allowed in most businesses in the South before the Civil Rights Movement. I grew up in the segregated South, and there's no way he'd have been accepted, much less elected.

(45,806 posts)The really sad thing is that HE probably believes what he's saying, and so do lot of the people listening to him.
The good thing is Jindal will NEVER become POTUS! Thank god!!!

(3,815 posts)except whatever he thinks will get him ahead. He's an Ivy League premed major who adopted Young Earth creationism to help him get elected. He pushed for an overhaul of Louisiana's tax structure, then signed the bill to kill it after he realized how unpopular it was. Ditto for Common Core. He was one of its biggest cheerleaders, now he's trying to get out in front of the parade against it. He chased after all these companies and threw corporate welfare at them to get them to locate in Louisiana, now he's throwing them under the bus to try to appeal to social conservatives in Iowa.
He started out as a moderate-conservative, which is about as progressive as it's possible for a statewide politician in Louisiana to be in this era. Then he got presidential fever and sprinted to the right of Huckabee and Santorum. He's for Jindal first, last, and always. He's willing to burn down Louisiana in the process if it gets him ahead. In fact, that may be part of his calculation-if he brings down the wrath of progressives on the state, it will make him a martyr in the eyes of the crazy Right.
