PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) For Democrats who had hoped to lure Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren into a presidential campaign, independent Sen. Bernie Sanders might be the next best thing.
Sanders, who is opening his official presidential campaign Tuesday in Burlington, Vermont, aims to ignite a grassroots fire among left-leaning Democrats wary of Hillary Rodham Clinton. He is laying out an agenda in step with the party's progressive wing and compatible with Warren's platform reining in Wall Street banks, tackling college debt and creating a government-financed infrastructure jobs program.
"I think our views are parallel on many, many issues," Sanders said in an interview with The Associated Press, describing Warren as a "good friend."
Sanders caucuses with the Democrats in Washington and is running for the Democratic nomination. He and Democratic former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley are vying to become the primary alternative to Clinton. Much of the energy behind a Clinton alternative has been directed to drafting Warren, but she has repeatedly said she won't run.

People supporting Bernie because they want the money out of politics and supporting his positions
People who support Hillary because "she can win"
It's 2008 all over again.

(30,099 posts)Doesn't have to be overwhelmingly so. I am hopeful we can have a good outcome, lots
of work ahead to stay focused on, that's for sure.

I have gone through "Cold War" propaganda. It doesn't look like anything has changed.
I'm glad you are here.

(41,144 posts)seems to have allowed a little more freedom to speak candidly these days. We'll see, I hope it continues. You have the right to speak your mind. ~ One poster tonight summed it up perfectly about Bernie, "Now I Want to vote for someone". Love it, very encouraging.
Good for you having gone through so many elections; I don't know if I could take it! I get really into it and am a pretty poor looser, bad personality trait. In 1980 I was in DC as a young working grad student and went into shock when Reagan was elected. That took a lot out of us like the 12 year Occupation of Dutch, Nancy, Bush Sr. et al. So glad you're here too! ~ Appa

(4,879 posts)The whole Reagan thing shocked me too.
I see a lot of Reagan Dems are still alive, and here on DU. It's a pity.
Backatcha.

(41,144 posts)like Kennedy Republicans. How it came to pass I understand fairly well. Hope it fades, and real FDR, RFK Dems. revive, one can hope! Have a glorious day-
Seattle friends have a woman friend who wore black, the entire time Dutch was president. Now that's commitment!

(14,255 posts)This Warren supporter was with Bernie the day he declared. I am not a personality-driven supporter, it is the principles and policies I look at. (Hopefully the adorable little charts won't be brandished at me!)

(14,255 posts)If Liz Warren endorsed Hillary, I would still be a Bernie supporter. I adore Warren, but she does not determine who I support.
I am assuming that Warren will not run at this point, because that would just weaken Bernie. If it was announced that she would be Bernie's VP pick, that would be fantastic, though!
If she threw in with Hillary, I would just assume promises were made or something like that - and stick with Bernie.
I believe Bernie's VP would be able to do good things on their own, or have more of a say in matters. I believe a Hillary VP pick would only be made on the basis of trying for votes that Hillary could not get on her own. That's what I believe, and I am not interested in arguing about it, really, it seems silly to argue about POSSIBLE events as if they were a done deal.

NorthCarolina
(11,197 posts)but perhaps Marcy Kaptur would be one possibility. She's progressive on all the issues, and is a representative from Ohio, and it puts a woman on the ticket. Run through the list of caucus members over at the CPC website. I would venture to guess that would be one starting point in his search (although I suspect he already knows who he would tap for that position should the opportunity arise).

(13,877 posts)I don't see Julian fitting in with Sanders as he seems to have jumped on Hillary's bandwagon.
Maybe Sanders could tap Joaquin who has been elected as a Texas State Senator from 2002-2012, then to the House of Representatives since 2012 so has experience with the Washington Beltway. Sounds a bit silly, but stranger things have happened. Truly representative of the North and the South. Hispanics are the largest minority group and Bernie's positions should resonate with them, especially if one of their own is on the ticket. Joaquin is single, and unfortunately, that may be a detriment.
Jeb has a Hispanic wife and sons...all of whom speak Spanish. I'm still not convinced he's going to be the nominee, but if so, the Hispanic issue should definitely be addressed.
And for the concerned...no it's not too soon to be discussing all of these matters. It is too important to sit on our laurels until some specific appropriate time. People are making up their minds, staff is being chosen, donors are being lined up, candidates are testing the waters, television interviews are setting out feelers, etc. I agree it's sooner than before, but with the "inevitability" of Hillary, seems it's come up earlier.

(41,144 posts)Hispanics in the media and govt. lately. I hope the Dems. can do some serious recruiting in that growing area. Henry Cisneros was at HUD in the 90s and since then there's Rep. Luis Gutierrez (IL), Sen. Bob Menendez (NJ), Bill Richardson, Thomas Perez, Secy. of Labor, Tony Villaraigosa, LA Mayor, Sonia Sotomayor and some others. But the 35-50 age group, including women needs work.

(13,877 posts)mother. Second generation, from almost a storybook (in politics, anyway) humble background, and it shows. And both of them now in DC. I read that Obama first offered Julian the Secretary of Transportation and he turned it down. Then he got HUD...which is a personal passion, given his background...decent housing for all.
These guys are true leaders at a time that is right to really electrify the Hispanic Vote...for Democrats.

(7,018 posts)even if they should only control the House. But they have more than that. They also control the
Supreme Court. No matter which way you look at it, Sanders/Warren (or anyone else) will be
having a rough time. There is no escape from it. But the two of them are both game fighters.
They both won't quit.
