Barack Obama brings up birthers in new ad, attacks Romney for Trump links

WASHINGTON — Last year’s “carnival barker” could be this year’s wedge issue if U.S. President Barack Obama’s re-election team has its way.

A new ad released Tuesday maligns Republican front-runner Mitt Romney’s failure to distance himself from the so-called birther conspiracies emanating once again from Donald Trump, the celebrity business tycoon famously smacked down for his views by Obama last year.

Set to circus music, the video suggests Romney should condemn Trump’s latest speculation that, despite the release of Obama’s long-form Hawaiian birth certificate a year ago, the president was born in Kenya.

The ad’s release came just hours before Romney was to appear alongside Trump and Newt Gingrich at a Las Vegas fundraiser for his candidacy. His campaign is even raffling a chance to have dinner with star of “The Apprentice” for anyone who donates $3 ...
