Clinton’s gay supporters: What enthusiasm gap?

Hillary Clinton won’t be marching in New York City’s Pride Parade on Sunday in Manhattan, and she has no plans to march in any pride parades across the country, but her absence hasn’t diminished the community’s enthusiasm for her.

Indeed, many gay leaders are so on board for her campaign that they prefer she spend time building support elsewhere instead of marching alongside them.

“She’s a former secretary of state, and they’re coming up on fundraising deadlines,” said Beth Shipp, executive director of LPAC, the “lesbian super pac,” which endorsed Clinton in April, justifying Clinton’s absence. “She is getting pulled in all directions, by all sources. The fact that the campaign is putting up a presence at pride events, even without her there, is great.”

Clinton’s campaign is registered to participate in the New York parade, and top staffers and volunteers are planning to march, flying campaign banners. And on Saturday in New Hampshire, New York Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who grew up in Hanover and is the first openly gay person to be elected to Congress from New York, will host the kickoff event for the “LGBT Granite Staters for Hillary,” in Portsmouth.

1. The LGBTQ elites like the Human Rights Campaign are definitely all-in

The community may be more divided than people think. A lot of us don't like the "sit down and know your place" politics that Centrists use all too often. Obama pretty much literally told a trans woman to do that yesterday, and I've seen Hillary's anti-gay marriage speeches making the rounds on LGBTQ websites recently in addition to DU.

Obama Appoints Transgender Attorney Shannon Minter To White House Commission

Obama administration advocates for transgender people

1. Obama is the first chief executive to say "transgender" in a public speech.

2. Obama is the first to name transgender political appointees.

3. Obama is the first to prohibit job bias against transgender government workers.

4. The first federal civil rights protection for transgender people in U.S. history was a hate crime legislation signed in by Obama.

5. The executive branch has made it easier for transgender people to update their passports, obtain health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, get treatment at Veterans' Administration facilities, and seek access to public school restrooms and sports programs.

6. Obama is the only president to invite transgender children to participate in the annual Easter egg roll at the White House.

7. The Office of Personnel Management announced that government-contracted health insurers could start covering the cost of gender reassignment surgeries for federal employees, retirees, and their survivors, which ended a 40-year prohibition.

8. The Department of Health and Human Services reversed a policy that prevented Medicare from financing transgender healthcare services.

9. Obama plans to sign an executive order banning federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

10. The U.S. Education Department extended Title IX, the law that bans gender discrimination in education, to protect transgender students, and President Obama backed that action.

These make up a large part of why Mara Keisling, executive director for the National Center for Transgender Equality said about Obama, "He has been the best president for transgender rights, and nobody else is in second place."

5. Just because he's been good doesn't mean he's perfect.

There really is a problem with his policies on deporting LGBTQ people. He can handle criticism from our community, he once said we had to "hold his feet to the fire" to make sure he's a "fierce advocate" for our people.

I don't intend to stop holding his feet to the fire, or anybody else that gets elected with my support.
