I believe too many Democrats are underestimating Bernie's popularity amongst independents and conservatives. He does fairly well amongst both groups in his home state of Vermont and his populist message has broad appeal.
There are many conservatives in this country that are upset with Wall Street, Middle Eastern wars, and have seen their jobs sent to China and elsewhere. His position on trade is going to play especially well in East Coast and Midwest where the manufacturing jobs have disappeared. In the Southeast, textiles and other industries have jettisoned for Asia. Southerners have lower incomes and large percentages of residents without health insurance. And money in politics is an issue that concerns the entire political spectrum. Absent Rand Paul, the GOP is going to be on the wrong side of this issue no matter who is their candidate.
Polls do not account for the voters that would usually stay home but will cast their vote if they don't think they are being lied to by politicians. Trust is a huge reason why people don't vote, perhaps the biggest. Couple that with someone talking about the issues that affect their daily lives and you'll see millions of people that typically don't vote dispense with their cynicism and go to the polls.
An honest man is a dangerous thing in American politics. Bernie's message will resonate. It already has if his crowds are any indication.

(45,485 posts)Rand is on the wrong side of enough issues to be a complete fraud and scumbag. No one should make a distinction between that fool and the host of other fools on the GOP side.
Fuck Rand Paul.

(36,281 posts)He wants to convince them to stop voting against their own best interests. If he is successful-- if he can forge alliances that include all of the 99%-- then nothing will stop him.

(17,064 posts)There are plenty of moderate republicans and swing voters who will look at the batshit crazy republican nominee, and trust and vote for Bernie. Hillary will not generate that trust.

(23,099 posts)Too many folks in America are all about the label and don't look as far as the content. I wish he'd run as a Democrat and take away that weapon against him. totally support his positions, but am definitely worried about the "socialist" stigma.

(8,879 posts)No matter who we nominate Republicans are going to label them socialist-communist-pinko-Nazi-fascists. Screw the label, vote for the ideas. Vote for your own interests. Vote for Bernie.

(23,099 posts)I still see lots of tirades about how Obama is a socialist on FB when I ocasionally look at old RW acquaintances pages on FB. I just hope that Bernies' message will overcome the static.

(6,440 posts)They think Obama is a socialist, they think Hillary is a socialist, they think anyone with a (D) after their name is a socialist. Running away from it in order to gain their votes is a waste of time.

(23,099 posts)There are some Independents who have had their or their friends or family members jobs outsourced and who hate big business that he could peel off if they weren't turned off by the label.

(6,440 posts)Many opinion polls show that fewer people react negatively to the word "socialist" than in previous years. I think it's a combination of the cold war receding into the rear-view mirror and the baggers endlessly screaming it at anyone outside their little bubble. It has lost its power as a boogey--word.
