2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI took one for the Hillary team today!
Oh, yes yes yes I did!
I spent the day with a lot of driving time cooped up in a car with a right winger who hates Hillary.

I took the high road... That's something Hillary herself could be proud of........
I wouldn't have done it for a stranger, but since it was an extended family member I have extremely minimal personal contact with, I took one for the team and didn't make Hillary look bad by setting the record straight. Because that would have been extremely offensive to him, and might not have turned out very well.
I listened to him tell me how during his 10 month hospital stay three years ago, he didn't have to pay a penny because he had RomneyCare. Yep, RomneyCare.... The guy hates Obamacare and thinks his RomneyCare is being replaced by Obamacare which isn't nearly as good. And this is a guy who has received assistance for his entire adult life... He thinks people are taking advantage of Obamacare and that if Hillary wins, 60% of the population will be on the dole and owe it to her and the Party to keep voting in Democrats. Yes, he thinks the Democratic platform is essentially a partisan election tactic that will pay people to vote in Democrats and Hillary will make it happen.
Right on the heels of that he went on to tell me that if Hillary gets voted in we will live in a communist country. That she is evil and her husband was terrible for America. And that if she gets elected this country will go to hell in a hand basket.
He really doesn't like Hillary! And he made sure that I knew he watches Fox News every day all day. I said to myself, that I was witnessing somebodies brain on Fox. What a complete and utter ignorant ass he is.
I bit my tongue like a good girl and didn't ruffle any feathers. But still I'm not sure if I did the right thing... maybe I did, maybe I didn't. But I gotta say it crossed my mind to drop him off at the side of road and let him call a cab.. Cause he was a nasty ass and if I never see him again, it would be too soon.

Nice to know you took it one for the team, but we gotta have every voter choosing the Democratic Party, and that's the goal, right?

(36,223 posts)I had asked him to let's put the politics aside... I asked him that so I could go about my day with him comfortably, but he couldn't stop himself and I didn't really want to ask any questions.
I sat there and took it like a good doobie!

(23,156 posts)Or is he willing to be an equal-opportunity hater of Bernie or any other Democrat?
You are a better person than I, because I'd have been sorely tempted to toss that clown out of the car in the middle of a freeway, or on some lonesome road twenty miles from anything else.
But you should have challenged him on his thinking RomneyCare isn't the foundation for ObamaCare, and that if he was entitled to it, then so is everyone else. God, I hate such selfish, ignorant, assholes.

(36,223 posts)I didn't want to ask him anything. I sat there and took it.
But he is an ignorant ass, who has opinions like Fox on steroids. I don't think I will ever spend another moment with him again.
He doesn't like Obama and he HATES Hillary. That's about as much as I needed to know.

(23,156 posts)as I'm pretty sure I would not have either, if I'd been in your place. But of course, I'm incredibly curious. I'd love to know if his hatred of Hillary is gender based, or because of Bill, or if all Democrats are equally hated by this guy.
Again, I don't fault you for not asking, but it would be interesting to know.
And again, praise to you for tolerating this ignoramus.

(2,375 posts)At least my cousin-in-law is good enough to keep his opinions to himself. He and my cousin split for a while before they ultimately hitched, and I strongly suspect it's because she didn't want to bring friction into the family over politics, even if there were only a few of us "clueless liberals" to deal with. Her Mom - though Republican - once closed a family news update e-mail by saying that she felt that healthcare for all citizens was a right -- and didn't want any flack for saying it! That was during the initial discussions re. the ACA --- proud of her. I had to ask the Teahadists in the clan to stop sending me politically-related e-mail.
I think had I been in your position, bb, I would have politely mentioned that I didn't want to "talk" politics. If he didn't respect that request, I would have been more firm......giving him (again, politely) the "shut up or walk" ultimatum. But that's me.
