2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIt's still very early--but long lines are being reported at voting sites in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - Within the first hour of voting Tuesday morning, lines were very long - including at the place where Milwaukee Mayor and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett voted, at Milwaukee's French Immersion School.
"Obviously, the lines are very, very long. It's a very encouraging sign. People are engaged," Barrett told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Michelle Richards.
"The energy has just been building, building and building, which we think is a very good sign. Both of our teenagers will be voting. We're just glad so many people care about our democracy, care about the future of the state."

Remember that both Milwaukee and Madison had their offices open for early voting on Memorial Day which is a holiday for all or most govt employees.

(972 posts)Five minutes before polls opened at 7 a.m. there was a line of about 25 people outside the Oak Avenue Community Center, 201 S. Oak Ave., in Marshfield. By 7:30 a.m., 161 people had voted.
Marvin Kuehner, 77, and his 55-year-old wife, Hope, arrived minutes before polls opened and cast the first two votes in the town of Lincoln. Like most of the voters interviewed there early Tuesday, they are Walker supporters disgusted with the recall.

- The line of voters at the 81st Street School in Milwaukee reached 10 deep out the door when the polls opened there promptly at 7 a.m. There were whispers from a few voters in line, but mostly silence as people moved quickly into voting booths.
- By 7:45 a.m., it was a 10- to 15-minute wait to vote at Plymouth Church on Milwaukee's east side.
Poll workers began to arrive at 5:30 a.m., and the first voter was there was cooling her heels outside about an hour later.
"Actually, she was here before some of my workers," said Patricia Mueller, chief inspector at the polling place at 2717 E. Hampshire St.
Has she seen it this busy before? "Yes -- for a presidential election," she said.
Slowing things down a bit is the fact that voters need to sign in when voting, but there were no gripes about it.
"It does take time to sign the book, but why would anyone complain? Look at the people in other countries that walk for days to to vote."
- It was a hectic morning at the Zeidler Municipal Building in downtown Milwaukee.
Its been very, very busy. Its right up there with some of the busier elections, said Public Library Director Paula Kiely, who has worked the past eight elections in Milwaukee.

Covenant Presbyterian, Ward 83. At the primary there were ~1650 registered, 939 voted. Hubby just voted about half an hour ago and was #681. I factored in about another 100 who registered at the polls both in the primary and today and that yields voter turnout of nearly 40% in four hours. Our neighborhood is predominantly while collar professional types and a ton of UW-Madison faculty. So we'll see.
Milwaukee 6th Ward (5+ / I voted at around 11:00 on the NW side of Milwaukee. I was voter 412. There were also 3 people getting registered and another 5 in line waiting to register. I usually vote around 11:30. In May at 11:30 I was voter 211. My vote number is usually 1/4-1/3 of the total. For example in May total turnout was 801. In April I voted at the same time and my vote was 126 -total votes were 606.
2010- 939-400 Barrett
2008-1363-421 Obama
I am thinking that votes will be closer to 1600 at the ward. We shall see.

(33,497 posts)The recall election got off to a quick start Tuesday, with early reports of strong turnouts and few problems.
The first round of voter turnout numbers around Dane County are still pending, but early indications in Madison suggest the number of voters could rival those in a presidential election.
"Everything leading up to this election, it completely felt like a presidential (election)," said Madison City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl, speaking of the workload, number of officials needed for the polls and the number of absentee ballots her office received prior to the election. "It's pretty busy at the polling."

Just heard John Nichols say on (17+ / 0-)
Ed Schultz's radio show that the Mayor of Madison, Paul Soglin, said this morning that he thinks the turnout in Madison will be at 70%. If Soglin is accurate (and he's been the Mayor of Madison off and on since back in the 70s I think) and he knows Madison like the back of his hand----this is HUGE. It means Madison which is heavily Democratic is going to help offset the Repug voters of Waukesha County! I'm hearing that Town of Madison (which is not the same as the City of Madison but is an area that's right on the edge of the city) had such high turnout that they had parking monitors directing traffic in the parking lot! That's a heavily African American area and I want to give a BIG shout-out to those folks for turning out! You go, Town of Madison! Saw another friend around 10:30 AM and he said that Town of Verona was very busy. This is nothing but good! I think we're going to do this IF all the working folk make sure they get to the polls before 8:00 PM this evening. If you're in line to vote prior to 8:00 PM, you WILL be allowed to vote!
