Exit polls show close Wisconsin recall race

(CNN) - Early exit polling of voters in the Wisconsin recall election showed a close contest, with a clear majority of voters having made up their minds well before the final weeks which saw intense campaigning on both sides of the aisle.

The exit polls showed that nearly nine of ten voters made their decisions prior to May, when Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett won the Democratic primary to challenge Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican. Petitions for the recall election circulated after Walker signed a bill last spring which cut collective bargaining rights for many state employees, prompting massive protests at the state house.

10. That's what did Carter in. '80 was the first year they used prediction maps.

Carter won the expected Eastern states but the maps predicted a sweep for Reagan throughout the rest of the country. A lot of people stayed home figuring it was useless to vote and this was WAY before the polls closed. Pissed the hell out of me.

but other exit poll information, such as Ds vs Rs vs.Is, or union member or not, age distribution, etc. Giving any polling information about how people actually votes before ALL the polls close in a state became a no-no after the FL 2000 debacle.

7. If both are high, we win. Seems Dem turnout is even higher?

It's still a blue state all things being equal.

9. I'm seeing crazy high turnouts in small (<50k) towns that are almost always red

It's gone beyond precedent and simply saying big turnout = dems win.

Where it's gone I don't know, but this is beyond facile interpretation.

8. "The CNN Exit Poll" could mean anything.

The only poll that matters is running out of ballots across the State, and that's a good sign for our side.
