Bernie Sanders Obliterates Jeb Bush For Telling Workers To Work Longer Hours
By: Jason Easley
Thursday, July, 9th, 2015, 11:57 am
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders tore into Jeb Bush for claiming that workers need to be more productive and work longer hours.
During an interview with The New Hampshire Union-Leader editorial board, Bush said, My aspirations for the country, and I believe we can achieve it, is for 4 percent growth as far as the eye can see, which means we have to be a lot more productive. Workforce participation has to rise from its all-time modern lows. It means that people need to work longer hours and through their productivity gain more income for their families. Thats the only way we are going to get out of this rut that were in.
Sanders replied to Bushs comments in a statement, Unfortunately, Sanders said, Gov. Bush does not seem to understand what is happening in our economy today. The sad truth is that because the middle class has declined over the last 40 years, while almost all new income and wealth have gone to the people on top, Americans already work the longest hours of any people in the western industrialized world. In fact, 80 percent of working men work longer than 40 hours a week. What we need now is an economy that provides decent wages and income for the middle class, not demands that people work even longer hours than they currently do.
Jeb Bush is the ultimate child of privilege. He has never had to have a job. Bush has never worked for a paycheck to keep food on the table. Just like Donald Trump, who was also born rich, Bush has no clue what it is like for people who have to work for a living.
In reality, all Jeb Bush was doing was repeating the core belief of Republican economic ideology that growth is driven by squeezing workers to do more while paying them less. Republicans oppose any law or regulation that benefits workers. The Republican idea of economic perfection is an economy where wealth is concentrated at the top, workers have no basic protections, Obamacare is gone, and there is no such thing as the minimum wage.
The Bush campaign tried to walk back his statement, but the truth has been revealed. Sanders was correct. The U.S. needs an economy that builds from the middle and rewards American workers for their productivity instead of condemning them to a life of low-wage economic slavery.

(17,204 posts)Just the ones who can't be made to work. Surely this is one reason why they oppose birth control and abortion. It's not just fear of the minorities out-breeding the dominant white race, but a need for more bodies to do whatever work is left over from robots, and to generally sneer at and feel superior to.
But for their purposes, there is such an over-abundance of labor that a few million dead bodies are of no consequence.

(109 posts)not men....
Bernie does view everyone as equal.
niyad
(113,344 posts)it is interesting that even people who do, in fact, view everyone as equal, still use "man" as the default language setting.
Man of Distinction
(109 posts)But I would prefer a gender neutral wording. "People" may make sense.
niyad
(113,344 posts)of his wording, and asked him why he didn't use gender-neutral terms. he went into this little riff about how it was just too much trouble, and would pretty much nullify whatever was being said. I had to walk away.

(I'm not sure he meant 'working-class' which doesn't really fit the sentence)

(8,580 posts)"working men and women" so I wonder if the and women part was inadvertently left off in transcription. I would be surprised if he just used "working men" because I don't think I've ever heard him use it unless he was citing a statistic or something that specified as only referring to working men.

But I also wonder if this whole circus is just more entertainment for the masses while the decisions on how to throw the "election" are made elsewhere.

(1,301 posts)I just wish he had added that productivity is already at an all-time high, while wages have remained stagnant.
On another note, I think Jeb should use that for his campaign slogan, "People need to work longer hours." That should rally the downtrodden...

(10,007 posts)relative to wages:
As wages stagnated in the 80's, productivity continued to increase. The difference between worker's productivity and worker's wages translates into profit for the capitalists.
Demanding more productivity from workers without increasing wages does nothing to help the worker, and only increases profits for corporations.
So, to summarize: Fuck you, Jeb.

"With all this now behind us, what did the Revolution accomplish? First, the Revolution weakened the political influence and leadership of the aristocracy. The aristocrats lost their privileges based on birth because from this point on, privilege would now be based on property and wealth. As the sans-culottes quickly realized, one evil simply replaced another. "

That's what happens when untrained and uneducated people, or people who have been trained or educated in an unhelpful way, have a revolution.
