* Anyone remember Goddard College?
One morning last month in Burlington, Vermont, at the law office of John Franco, one of Bernie Sanders best friends since the 1970s, Franco talked to me at length about Sanders commitment and his consistency and his charisma. Even at the beginning of Sanders career, he said, four decades before he started packing arenas in college towns and liberal havens as a renegade 73-year-old self-described socialist taking on Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Democratic Party establishment, people didnt want him to stop talking. He talked about how Sanders completely changed the political culture in Vermont. He talked about how Sanders surprising current surge in national polls is validation.
Im proud of Bernard, he said.
All of that was interesting. But I wanted to know not just about what Sanders has done. I wanted to know more about who he has been. So I asked what I thought was an innocuous question about Sanders son. How did Sanders juggle aspirations as an eager political activist with his role as a divorced young father?
Thats out of bounds, Franco said.
Out of bounds?
Its none of your f-ing business, he said. He smiled, but he wasnt joking.

Sanders life in electoral politics started on Oct. 23, 1971, in Plainfield, Vermont, in the library of Goddard College, a campus that doubled as a lefty hot spot, when the nascent anti-war Liberty Union Party was looking for someone to run for U.S. Senate. Sanders was barely 30 years old. He had thick-rimmed glasses and dark, curly hair, and his toddler son, Levi (pronounced LEH-vee), was seated in his lap. Sanders raised his hand.

(85,996 posts)...Bernie's younger life experiences are a compelling story of an idealistic and caring American very in tune with his generation.
This Politico hack sees it through a skewed and jaundiced lens. Probably envious. I think this will appeal to most readers. I'm sure it was meant to titillate and scandalize him.

I saw this a few days ago and put it aside. 'Secret?' Bah. The author thinks he's revealing something important. I think your perception of his friend's recollections is what most reasonable folks will take from this.

(1,348 posts)I learned several things I didn't know, including the fact he made educational films and film strips, which is a cool thing.
I also liked the way the author ended the piece. Even Bernie's friends don't miss an opportunity to tout his message.

But inevitably Bernie's private life will come to the fore.
The New York Times ran an article about Bill de Blasios history as a supporter of the left during the Central American wars hoping to smear him. Instead I think it made people admire him.

(85,996 posts)not sure the last comment came from him...the author's pretty sweet on Huckleberry here: http://www.politico.com/story/2015/05/mike-huckabee-bill-clinton-hope-arkansas-117577.html
Most of the right-wing use food stamps as a derogation in their rhetoric. I think this is a case where the author believed this would affirm conservative memes about Sanders. To me, it depends on what kind of political eye you're reading it with.

No liberal wants to hear this judgey shit.
It's a interesting profile though, even of the little "gotcha" bit fails.

(47,209 posts)it's actually a pretty nice write up. I think you'd have to be predisposed to hate him (or severely over protective) to think it was malicious. Stupid editor wants a little gossip, like every other stupid editor.

(9,126 posts)And most people just said, meh. But to be talking about a child of a candidate is never cool. It wasn't cool all the way back to Amy Carter & Chelsea. It's usually Democrat's children that get the brunt of it as it always seems as though Republican kids get a pass. People should tell journalists that they are out of line.

(47,209 posts)And how people wanted to weigh in on whether Hillary should have divorced him.
Who gives a damn if they are happy enough with what they have? It's got nothing to do with anything, because they're consenting adults. No one wants marital advice unless they are asking you for it.

This was an attempted hit piece on Senator Sanders which fails miserably, imo.
If the only 'secret' they found while digging in the trash is about his son, well, that speaks volumes to me about how little his 'past' differs from his present.

My impression of this article is that it was quite fair from what I can ascertain from my position on my computer, in my home, in California. And I really dig those photos especially the one of him and his wee bairn in arms.. Love that one. His back story is really quite interesting and stuff we should know about so again, I'm thrilled with this piece.
