The Two Most Important Lessons of the Wisconsin Recall Election

Lesson Number One: The Truth does not matter
Lesson Number Two: The Democrats have no response to Lesson Number One.

Will Obama's team learn these lessons in time? (In my opinion) Not with Axelrod calling the strategic shots.

Two proposed solutions:

1) Go low - really low - beat the GOP at their own game, or
2) Neuter the messenger - Label all Super PAC ads as lies made by secret donors with secret agendas.

More details in the article.

Another huge lesson is that Money (ads) matters - because people believe what they are told. n/t NRaleighLiberal Jun 2012 #1

Aside from lots of money and a lack of scruples, what the GOP also has is a easy to understand narrative that they've advertised relentlessly at least since Reagan:

*) Govt == Bureaucracy == Inefficiency == Bad
*) Private Enterprise == Competition == Efficiency == Good
*) Liberals == Immoral == Not-Real-Americans
*) Conservatives == Moral == Real-Americans

There are ways to sell the liberal narrative in an easy-to-understand way. People like Krugman and Warren show us how it's done all the time. Nick Hanauer did it:

The rest of the Dems just need to decide that they want to fix the country more than they're worried about upsetting Republicans.

1. Romney is Bush foreign policy 2.0

2. The Romney domestic policy is give to the rich tax the poor and middle class. Period

3. Every ad you see on tv trashing the president or democrats is a lie, paid for by the 1% for the 1%.

That's really all team POTUS, the DNC, the surrogates, and the politicians themselves need to stay. Stay on message and you win.

I am particularly fond of point # 3 because the GOP can't refute it. Everything on tv by the GOP or its superpacs is a lie or a half truth at best.
