2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPositive Bernie Sanders thread
There used to be a tradition on DU where threads were started exclusively to talk positively about our candidates for president. I will start by saying something positive about Bernie Sanders.
Bernie Sanders has built his career on speaking to those in need.

(707 posts)One of my main reasons for choosing him is his unwavering support of taking care of those of us. We need someone on our side that does more than put a decal on their car.

(5,178 posts)I have been watching and listening to Bernie battle for health care, for assistance, for veterans for years.
The thought of President who not only wasn't actively looking to create more veterans, but wanted to care for the current ones, fills me with resolve to see it made so.

(7,300 posts)And walks the walk. His record is consistent and in step with what the majority of Americans want. He's honest, straightforward and treats the voter as adults by challenging us to become involved in running our own government through activism. He states clearly he can't accomplish his platform (nor can any other President) with out massive citizen involvement. He's the real deal.

(16,187 posts)If he became president, even the brainwashed Fox watchers would begin to see the web of lies they've been eating for the last twenty years or so.
Hopefully the country would shift leftward and the right wing would need to become moderates to survive.

(9,497 posts)I started to see people say that if Liz didn't want to, we should get Bernie.
I never thought he would try and when he did, I felt finally, we are going to have a real debate about where we want the Dems to go.
Then the newsfeeds my friends started posting, made me really read his words.
I haven't been disappointed with all the due diligence I have done to see if he is the real deal.
He's the real deal.
He sparked an inspiration in the general election for me.

(57,936 posts)Bernie combines that with a strong moral sense, a sense of right and wrong and fairness to all.
Bernie follows his conscience even when it costs him politically as with his Iraq vote.
Bernie wants to institute universal affordable pre-school for all American families who want it.
Bernie wants some form of single payer health insurance so that we can do away with Medicaid and replace it with just plain insurance for all.
Benie wants to make sure every qualified American can go to college.
The list of positives is so long. I could go on and on and on and on.
Bernie will bring back some form of Glass-Steagall that will insure that the American taxpayers are not on the hook when banks and investment houses gamble money on crazy schemes and "investments" like the derivatives that brought them down in 2008.
Bernie will fight to raise taxes on the rich individuals and corporations and maybe find a way to tax American money placed in tax havens like the Caymans and Switzerland, maybe even countries like Belgium or Ireland. Those tax havens are not just a problem for the US. They make it easy for corruption in politics and business. Bernie understands this and will work to find a way to do something about it. It will take international cooperation.
Bernie's hair is beautiful. It's free and spontaneous like he is.
Bernie can talk to anybody and does. Never fears saying the wrong thing because he tries to check to be sure he talks and lives his conscience. And when he makes a mistake he admits it.
Bernie tries to be fair.
Bernie wants us to form a movement that will remain active after he is elected. Instead of negotiating from a position of disadvantage, he wants to negotiate with Congress from a position of advantage by calling for and applying constituent pressure.
I could go on and on, but let's see what other people hae to say. There is just so much good to say about Bernie.
NO CORPORATE MONEY (or at least very, very little).
Bernie is the greatest.

(16,350 posts)He organized with CORE (the Congress of Racial Equality) in Chicago, and led a sit-in against segregated housing as far back as 1962.
Sanders is one of only 2 sitting U.S. Senators who actually attended the 1963 March on Washington, and saw Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., give his I Have A Dream speech in person. (The other is Mitch McConnell, believe it or not...) At the time, Sanders was an organizer for SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee).
