In This Money Race, Bernie Sanders Wins

Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton won the fundraising competition, but rival Bernie Sanders snagged the award for running the more frugal operation, campaign finance reports filed this week show.

Sen. Sanders of Vermont has been waging a campaign with a fraction of Mrs. Clinton’s overhead.

The Clinton campaign payroll dwarfed that of Mr. Sanders, who is running second in the Democratic field. Mrs. Clinton spent nearly $3.7 million on campaign salaries; Mr. Sanders, $112,000.

....

By contrast, the Sanders campaign is a seat-of-the-pants affair. Mr. Sanders’s aides estimate they spent a few thousand dollars on office furniture, compared with about $43,000 laid out by the Clinton campaign.

Michael Briggs, a Sanders spokesman, said when it came time to outfit the Burlington office, a few people drove a U-Haul to a Vermont store that sells government surplus.

The campaign used Craigslist to find office furniture for Mr. Sanders’s campaign office in Washington D.C.

I don't want my hand-earned money going o frivolous expenditures designed to make the campaign look glossy. I want it spent where it counts--attracting regular people and getting out the vote, getting out the message. $900,000 on polling (and the campaign has barely started??)--this shows a tremendous lack of confidence in the candidate's ability to serve up a winning message and convince people--particularly as the presumed front-runner.

If she wins the nomination, I will certainly vote for her, but Bernie is practicing what he is preaching and the care he is taking with OUR money now says a LOT about the care he will take with it later.

Clearly Bernie's MESSAGE is far more valuable once the people hear it and they will, more and more each day, than all the Corporate $$$ in the world.

It is estimated that Clinton just recently added 450 paid positions for her campaign. Certainly, many of these will be only temporary until after the election, but it is bringing income to people. Glad Bernie can generate volunteers, but I would like to see him actually pay more of those who work for him.

salaries they can live on. Bernie's volunteers are investing in a government that will provide a future where once again, Americans can earn a decent living that will provide for their families.

Maybe Hillary cannot get enough volunteers to help with her campaign.

Bernie otoh, has hundreds of thousands of volunteers which know that what we need is a government that is working for the people.

But campaigns providing part time income for students, retirees, stay at homes, etc are real tangible benefits for a lot of people. Volunteers exist in every campaign, but when it makes sense to pay, you should pay.

I wonder what candidates did before Corporations were pouring billions into campaigns? Maybe some good politicians were able to compete with the Corporate Funded choices of Billionaires? Maybe we got a few decent people into our government because they didn't need more than Billion $$ from people like the Koch Brothers?

But hey, maybe as a 'true believer' (I love seeing the talking points pop up, they cost money too btw) I'm just not capable of understanding how great it is to be able to BUY a candidate, because after all who knows better what is good for this country, than Jaimie Dimon or the Kochs?

Btw, is there something wrong about believing that the Government is supposed to be FOR the people? Not for sale to the highest bidders? I admit to being a true believer in that concept.

And if working part time for political campaigns is all the work available in this country to the point where people are RELYING on it, wow, things are way worse than even the most pessimistic economist thought.

People volunteering their time for a cause the believe in is worse than people being paid to support a cause. Especially when the cost of such salaries mandates more money being funneled into elections from corporate sources.

Sorry, your and my world views do not mesh.

and those of us who feel betrayed by the system. Sanders is supported by the younger voters who've been kept down and who see the system as a fraud.

The young voters who barely think voting matters will not be there for a candidate who is not like Sanders.
