BREAKING: Obama administration to grant work permits to younger, law-abiding illegal immigrants

Last edited Fri Jun 15, 2012, 01:27 PM - Edit history (1)

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.

The policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.

Obama will speak about this new policy at 1:15pm ET today (stepping all over Romney's "bus tour&quot .

On MSNBC, Mike Viqueira, a reporter, just called it a "political master stroke."

Rmoney gets 500.

So what happens if 3000 Obama supporters show up and shout "LIE" every time he tells one? Or just sing songs?

(Besides them getting sore throats).

Or stay silent and hold up signs that say: Romney is lying to you. or something to that effect? Something more locally inspired?

This is another "rattle the cage" issue similar to the birth control mandate a few months back. The RW cant resist this "red meat" and will attack the President thus alienating Hispanics even more. This will further solidify the Hispanic vote for the President and ensure most of them show up in November.

Well done Team Obama!

Can someone please explain to me how this law affects illegal immigrants who were not brought here by family members?

My girlfriend came here from Asia on a work permit, and decided to stay. Can this help her in anyway?? We're desperate to stay together and she really wants to work and study. She has a degree from her country but can't get a job she deserves because she doesn't have a work permit. If she gets deported she can't come back for around 10 years and nothing scares us more.

I'm not trolling or starting anything, I'm just desperate to understand this act by Obama and hoping it can help us.

Thanks

19. According to the article,
Fri Jun 15, 2012, 08:56 PM
Jun 2012

"Under the administration plan, illegal immigrants will be immune from deportation if they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed. The officials who described the plan spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss it in advance of the official announcement."

I hope this helps.

If your girlfriend came here on her own steam, she does not qualify under this program.

If her work permit is still valid and she has a clean record, she can get a green card by marrying you. Step up...!

One of the most significant changes between the Bush and Obama administration is in using border security forces.

ICE, which is responsible for enforcing overstays, no longer has any budget allocated to handle law abiding overstayers.

There are a few exceptions but they shouldn't effect your girl friend. ICE still conducts raids on large factories where the owners or managers have a long established record of recruiting and assiting illegal workers, especially if there is child exploitation or other exploitation of workers.

Beyond that they are not looking for her. In fact there have been people who have posted at DU that they were in a similar situation, wrote to ICE that they wanted to end the stress and be deported only to get a letter back saying that ICE doesn't have the resources to pursue cases like this.

ICE instead is focused on pursuing illegal aliens that are working in criminal enterprises and committing illegal acts. As long as your friend doesn't break any laws ICE will not be looking for her.

In the event that she were to marry a permanent resident or citizen then she would be able to regularlize her status here and apply for a permanent visa. Alternatively she could voluntarily return and you could apply for a fiance visa, although waiting times vary according to country and it might take 6 months or a year.

Lots of people thinking Obama was a messiah of some sorts not realizing political realities.

Even if he ended the drone wars (which he will), ended the war in Afghanistan (which he will), and toned down the surveillance state (probably won't, too effective), he'd still be hated for some reason or another.

who posted his support of the president, and as you can imagine he was immediately met with derision and vitriol. The very first post in the thread chided the newbie for not posting something "substantive" in support of the president. I then pointed out to said poster that he was normally conspicuously absent from such threads. I have checked nearly every thread about the president's big announcement today, which I thought was "substantive", and guess what? Not a peep. Not a Rec. Nada.

The derisive attitudes were by those who themselves lack substance but post the canned four point criticism of Obama, without recognizing what he has done (within his power) and what he wishes to do (completely beyond his power without a progressive congress).

It's amusing to say the least.

Neo-trotskyites is what I consider those people. I would say neo-stalinists but that would get a post hidden.

Dream Act legislation has been held up in the Congress for some time now, and they had no intention of addressing the issue. With this announcement, the president has now made this a front burner issue, and possibly brought many deserving young people out of the shadows, and rightly so.

I just wish more on our side could see this.
