Related: About this forumToo bad Obama can't raise the minimum wage by fiat. That would pump a lot of money into the economy.
Maybe it's time for another bill in Congress, even if it can't win -- just to remind working people who's on their side.

House Dems propose $10 per hour minimum wage
A group of Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives proposed this week a bill that would raise the nations minimum wage from $7.25 to $10 per hour, which they say will help consumer purchasing power catch up to the rate of inflation since the late 1960s.
Its primary sponsor, Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL), is even calling the bill The Catching Up to 1968 Act. Jackson explained in prepared text that it may sound like a hefty wage increase but it doesnt fully equal the purchasing power of the minimum wage in 1968 which today would be closer to $11 per hour. The bill is really only allowing American workers a degree of catch-up.

(8,124 posts)We thought (or hoped) we were getting an FDR , and we got GWB Lite.
After NDAA and the Afghan Surge.. even the "Lite" designation faded away.
Not complaining.. not bashing Obama... just saying..... I will vote for him... but I don't expect much change this time.

FDR was a great president, but he wasn't the liberal or progressive icon that most here seem to think he was. Most of his programs took years to implement, and he had much greater majorities in Congress. Many on the left accused FDR of betraying progressive ideals by making 65 the age for SS and but limiting who it covered. Everyone needs to read a little history and get some perspective.

(109,000 posts)Did Bush support health insurance for all?
Did he support gay rights and end DADT? Did he refuse to support DOMA?
Did he support women's issues? Equal pay? Contraception? Abortion?
Did he get us out of Iraq?
Did he get BinLaden or did he use him as an excuse to wage his wars?
And what did you think about those Supreme Court Justices Bush appointed? You think they are on the same level as the ones appointed by Obama?
And what about Congress? Obama's never enjoyed a Senate majority large enough to stop the Republicans' unending filibusters -- a tactic they never tried with a white President. Do you really not get how much racism is behind the Republican hate?
And FDR was a 3 term President, yet you're comparing his accomplishments to Obama after 3 and a half years. Guess you think that's fair, too.

(69 posts)Economics 101: when you raise the minimum wage by fiat, you create one or more of the following:
- unemployment (people with no qualification find it harder to fit in)
- inflation (production costs rise)
- loss of competitiveness (=increased imports = increased deficits)
Social measures that could work would be to stop the race at the lowest taxation rate on capital through international negociation, and reinvesting tax earnings in future building measures: infrastructures, education, etc..
