Romney Camp Seriously Vetting Portman, Pawlenty, Advisers Say
Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty are among a select number of vice presidential contenders being more intensively vetted by the Romney campaign, according to two Romney advisers, reports the Washington Post. The post also named Rep. Paul Ryan from Wisconsin and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal as two others getting a more serious look.
The Post reports that Portman is the favorite:
But many Republicans close to Romney consider Portman to be the front-runner for the nod. The outside adviser to Romney said that as Romneys team looks deeper into Portman, they find more appeal including, the source added, that Portman speaks fluent Spanish.
Anybody that scratches the surface a little bit on Portman starts liking him more and more the deeper they go, the source said.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, despite being buzzed about as a top contender, has not received more than a preliminary review, nor has New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte or New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, according to the Post.

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,412 posts)Neither of them will produce any Palin-size fiascos, which will be helpful for the GOP, but they probably wouldn't excite their ravenous base too much either, which will make things more difficult for them, of course, particularly since they don't trust Romney much already. If they go with a real bland "Romney-esque" clone, then the GOP is probably betting that the base hates President Obama so much that they would vote for Romney no matter who he chooses.

(115,693 posts)Except for Bobby Jindal, who is a boring brown guy. In any case, they are all guys and they are all boring. Mitt's campaign is about to become an even bigger snooze than it already is. All of those dudes have the ability to suck all of the energy out of whatever venue they occupy. Mitt's campaign will be a charisma black hole. It's where excitement goes to die.

(33,497 posts)Portman speaks 'fluent spanish' big deal! They think something like that matters more than how you stand on real issues. I also don't think that Portman necessarily means that Ohio will go GOP.
I am hoping he picks Walker or Ryan for VP.Biden would wipe the floor with eather one In VP debate. The fact some forget the same voters who keep walker In office plan to vote for Obama.
RommneyRyan would be great to run aginst. He already endosed the Ryan budget.
Portman has one advantage for Obama. He's a former Bush budget director. That would be gift for our side.

(2,781 posts)Bland and uncharismatic. Oh, and he's a former Bush official. He's certain to get the GOP base fired-up alright. All the more reason why I hope Romney chooses him.

(20,176 posts)This story didn't get much play against Pawlenty when it broke because his campaign was toast...so if Romney chooses him, it's not overexposed...it could be the Willie Horton moment of the 2012 campaign. Why is Romney's judgement so poor that he knowingly-chose a running mate who pardoned a serial pederast?

A pardon in Minnesota
November 30, 2010
This is the story every governor fears:
Two years ago, Gov. Tim Pawlenty and two other officials pardoned Jeremy Giefer, who had served a short time in jail in the 1990s as a young man for having sex with a 14-year-old girlfriend whom he later married.
Blue Earth County prosecutors now say Giefer was sexually assaulting another young girl hundreds of times before and after he received his pardon.
