UPDATED Seattle: Did Bernie supporter(s) BITE BLM supporter(s)?

Last edited Mon Aug 10, 2015, 04:11 PM - Edit history (2)

A young woman is making that claim on facebook:

Just from social media alone I been saying Bernie Sanders supporters are the worst but I found out today that not only did they call black folks the n word, not only did they say shit like black lives don't matter, not only did they go after any black body they saw yesterday & talk shit, but they were also out there fuckin biting people . Yes biting people.
I'm waiting for yall mfs to be outraged about that. I'll wait 😴😴😴😴

I don't want to post her name. But there it is.

UPDATE -- A PERSON WHO WAS ALLEGEDLY BITTEN AT THE EVENT HAS POSTED A PICTURE OF THE BITE AND A PICTURE OF THE ALLEGED BITER, ON FACEBOOK. I AM WAITING TO SEE IF SHE GIVES PERMISSION TO SHARE THOSE PHOTOS.

IF I POST THESE, IT WILL BE SO THAT DU CAN SEE, AND EXAMINE FOR ANY TRUTH OR FICTION. NOT TO DISCREDIT BERNIE, OR DISCREDIT BLM.

Since you seem to be in close contact with them, perhaps you could enlighten them to the fact that there were republicans, conservatives and racists in the audience and they can not assume that they were attacked (if in fact they were) by Sanders supporters?

Hit and run. Serious accusation about Sanders supporters with no link and no corroboration. this doesn't rise beyond the level of a nasty rumor intended to hurt Sanders.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Aug 10, 2015, 10:37 AM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Posting an unsubstantiated rumor is ridiculous but this is so over-the-top, I think pointing it out is better.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I usually vote to leave, however this one is just posting some unfounded claim from MyFace, keep it on your wall or whatever the heck is on that trash.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: This is just too silly to be real. It's probably satire being posted as something serious.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: A quick DU search suggests grasswire is a supporter of Sanders. grasswire not accusing anyone of anything. He or she simply copied and pasted a tweet and asked a question.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The Accusation in the OP is silly, so much so that I have to wonder if the OP is seriously putting it out there for consideration, or ridicule. Either way, I dont think it is a TOS violation.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I've been around DU long enough to know that grasswire doesn't write so-called "hit and run" posts. "This doesn't rise beyond the level of a nasty rumor intended to hurt Sanders?" No, sorry, alerter...that's YOUR opinion. A question was asked. It's clear that you didn't LIKE the question, but that doesn't mean that you're "right" about grasswire.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given

To show that some real crazy accusations are being made in order to attack Bernie -- accusations that are not reality based on first look.

Now, I might believe that Donald Trump would bite protesters. But Trump is the enemy of those who seek justice and good governance.

No one rooted in reality will believe that Bernie or his supporters would do any of the things she claimed they did.

50. There have been a couple reports about the angry crowd
Mon Aug 10, 2015, 03:05 PM
Aug 2015

I'm not saying the crowd didn't have cause to be angry since they were there to see Bernie.

There has been back and forth here about whether people were angry about being called "white supremacist liberals" or whether the crowd anger escalated the situation and the women should have been given the space to speak (all the stuff about the Palin backpack is after-the-fact - while they were on stage, as far as anyone knew, they represented #BLM). Sounds like a two-way vicious dynamic.

In my own humble opinion, Bernie should actually be engaging with this movement and integrating it with his program. But random people shouldn't be disrupting and seizing the stage - especially since he doesn't have the money to build his campaign any other way and Hillary hasn't been getting the same treatment. GOP operators could easily pretend to be #BLM and simply undermine Bernie's campaign this way. Everyone should be able to see by the reaction on the DU that Hillary's campaign would get the blame whether she is responsible or not. Therefore, these random disruptions can't go on.

However, Bernie can choose to embrace the #BLM cause and invite it in. I hope he does.

I wish people on DU would dial back their reaction to the "disruption" - ESPECIALLY the "white supremacist liberals" accusation. All it takes is a little googling to find that is a common way the experience of oppression is being described. It behooves us to come to grips with that instead of dismissing it as a "GOP meme" that some "operative" must be dropping in there. Above all, let's not prove the point!

Mon Aug 10, 2015, 03:50 PM

There were about ten speakers. It was.an event people had worked on for months. Secondly, the women were given the opportunity to speak, and refused to relinquish the stage after 20 minutes. Hostility engenders hostility. Before the crowd got hostile, these women screamed and shoved and threatened. Thirdly, Bernie has been engaging with BLM since NN. A lot.

I wish you'd informed yourself a bit before pontificating.

71. Because your disagreeing on stuff I'm not saying
Mon Aug 10, 2015, 05:08 PM
Aug 2015

That's what I'm regarding as the attack.

I'm a Bernie supporter who thinks he should engage with #BLM. I do realize that he's already doing that and has been doing that since Netroots Nation. He was probably doing that before Netroots Nation. I was simply articulating my opinion that he should do that.

My comments here have been in regard to Progressives in general - to think about how we participate in the cycle of hostility. It is a dynamic. I absolutely agree that those two woman shouldn't have disrupted Bernie's event, and I'm frankly not sure how Bernie could have handled it any way other than he did once this did happen.

My "pontificating", as you call it, is on our collective outrage at being termed "white supremacists liberals" - and how that can actually be found throughout #BLM writings online. Instead of suppressing fellow DU forumers like Bravenak who try to convey that line of thought to us, we should perhaps be thinking about how that line of thought is being generated. IMHO, the cycle of hostility is partially being generated from the pushing of the phrase "All Lives Matter". I realize Bernie didn't say that - I've been informed he didn't even say that in the "trap NPR interview" (good for Bernie!) - and he continues to be unfairly targeted by #BLM despite that. But, we, his supporters DO continually use that phrase. At least in the area where I'm from. I constantly have to combat it and educate on it. Sorry if you feel that this is "pontificating", but I feel this is an area where we do have to do some self-criticizing and improve our own behavior if we don't want to see the backlash.

It is, however, a bit weird to post such an allegation without a link. Furthermore, it seems there would have been reports in the news if such a thing had actually happened. If someone bit me at a public event I would not hesitate to make a police report and/or alert the media. Since no one has apparently done either of those things, my BS-o-meter is hovering at about 99.99%.
