Sanders L.A. Rally: A Wave of Emotion as Black Lives Matter Opens Event (with edit)

Last edited Tue Aug 11, 2015, 09:24 AM - Edit history (1)

You know the crowd is excited when the crowd does the Wave at a political rally!! (Wish I could embed just the video, but the link should take you to it).

https://twitter.com/arturocsulb/status/630965851986853888

But, I digress. Onto the story:

Two days after Black Lives Matter protesters derailed his rally, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders allowed the same activist group to open a major campaign event in Los Angeles.

The move on Monday night kicked off a wildly enthusiastic rally that avoided his previous problem in Seattle.

Sanders told the crowd of about 16,000 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena that "no president will fight harder to end institutional racism."

The response was a deafening roar and chants of "Bernie!"

http://www.newser.com/article/43ab14134d714a4db37317971ab7fef9/sanders-lets-black-lives-matter-activists-kick-off-la-campaign-event-gets-enthused-response.html

(Note: Crowd count is wrong. Not sure where the story originated or I'd ask them to correct it.)

ON EDIT: Apparently, there is some confusion about who opened what for whom. See this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251510227

I think the issue really is that Bernie's new press secretary, Symone Sanders, worked as a criminal justice advocate and is a supporter of Black Lives Matter, so I don't think the media was being it's usual lazy self, but just got confused on her credentials. Trust me. I have no problem calling out the media, but, in this case, I think it was more confusion that stupidity.

I was watching the event, but was having trouble seeing the introductions on the live feed posted on Bernie TV (by volunteers) and did not catch most of the intros. I later found a more clear feed on LiveStream, but, by then, Sanders was already speaking, so I had no clue how many people had spoken prior.

Just wanted to correct my own thread, even though I didn't write the article above.

Thanks.

They didn't need to disrupt. That was just the clown show of the left.

Martin Luther King demonstrated, but he never resorted to insulting his allies even if they were white.

The disruption at Netroots Nation and in Washington were nothing more than anti-democratic, childish outbursts.

Bernie is and has been strongly on the side of Black people and civil rights issues since his student days through the present.

It was great to hear the presentation tonight on the Black Lives Matter issues. The crowd went wild with support for the Black Lives Matter message brought in a way that was inclusive of -- the crowd and of Bernie rather than combative against the very liberal crowd that Black Lives Matter needs to support it.

Met social workers, people who work daily with the issues that Black Lives Matter is talking about.

The Los Angeles Bernie event was just wonderful, harmonious, huge crowd. I am thrilled that so many really good people, real, down-to-earth people are supporting Bernie. We will be working hard to get him elected. You can count on that.

have been fighting for for DECADES? You seem more concerned about USING the issue. I would think anyone who sincerely cared about it would be happy that the disrupters were exposed and have not harmed the entire movement as they could have, were the people who actually care about this issue, using it too. But sincere people will never, ever stoop that low as to use something as important as this is, for political purposes.

The total disrespect towards Symone Sanders from them eg, shows it isn't about AA issues at all.

Enough of this, the public has spoken AAs have spoken and people are sick to death of these dirty tricks and mostly the cynical attempt to play a race card only THEY are willing to play,

We've moved on so to continue to try to use this will will rase a lot of questions as to WHY.

Wed Aug 12, 2015, 07:44 PM

BLM central has not denounced Marissa. That entire story circulating was false. People certainly have been exposed, but it is not BLM. It is those who have showed they seen the comfort of one politician and their own feelings as more important than the movement to protest an epidemic of killings of people of color. They have exposed the fact their political worldview is entirely bound to white middle class privilege to the hostile exclusion of the human rights and lives of the subaltern. So yes, there has been a great deal of exposing going on, but it hasn't been of Marissa Johnson and her fellow protesters. It has been of those who hold their own comfort and egos above the rights of the many, who stand in opposition to everything except self-entitlement.

I'm afraid I do not share your view that Bernie Sanders is intrinsically superior to other politicians or other human beings, or that his supporters are better than the rest of the human race. I find that entire notion utterly reprehensible. I believe in human equality. I believe in leftist activism, in movements that challenge power and authority for the rights of the many over the few, which means challenging those who seek the highest office in the country. Black votes have put Democrats in office for decades, and yet racism and racial violence proliferates. Black people have every right to challenge elected officials, and anyone committed to human equality has a responsibility to support their efforts.

Unfortunately, BLM did not open for Bernie. That would have been a stroke of political brilliance on his part. Sadly, someone saw his press secretary, a black woman, and concluded it was BLM, presumably because they think all black women look alike.

Don't for a second mistake me for a person that buys the self-righteous cant you're peddling. I see right through it. Oh, I know you believe what you say. That, however, doesn't make it any better. Rather, it simply exposes the shallow foundation on which your claims of leftism are based on. The rights of the people should always come before those of the political elite or the few. Without that basic commitment, there can be no social or economic justice. When people so easily through BLM overboard, I know they will not think twice before doing the same to the rest of the subaltern they so easily dismiss as less important.

Now perhaps you ought to return to explaining how Corey Booker went from corporate sell out to righteous defender of Bernie's character in a few short weeks. That will take some 'splaining.

The Pied piper Bernie Sanders for the middle class, while the GOP wants to put our interest last, he’s gon give it to you raw, no hesitation, with the right ideas to lead this great nation, no handouts no special interests groups, he don’t lie to get votes he’s telling you the truth, and while the media wants to down play him, He’s still gonna fight tell em all he ain’t playing, pushing for higher wages so we all can feed our families, The only one I know who can conquer this Insanity, of this wall street bickering, belittling the poor, dollar bills only thing they’re considering, when people need health care, kids need school, when it comes to politics Bernie’s breaking rules, no attack ads on the competition needed, he’s running on the facts and its something that we needed,

Feel the Bern, make em Feel the Bern, all the way to the White House Feel The Bern,
Feel the Bern, make em Feel the Bern, tell the haters on the Right, They can feel the Bern,
Feel the Bern, make em Feel the Bern, all the way to the White House Feel The Bern,
Feel the Bern, make em Feel the Bern, tell the haters on the Left, They can feel the Bern,

You see them scared shook, “he’s a democratic socialist”, but they don’t even know what it means they just roll with it, get over it, check the resume, fighting for civil rights ever since the first day, while other candidates, still with their hands out, we do it old school grassroots standout, cuz this is our time to have our voices heard, you fat cats had your chance now it’s our turn, they say he can’t win cuz he’s just too liberal, way too extreme, too honest, too cynical, they want another robot politician the same old rhetoric, now they’re gonna listen

His message is just there. It's just honest. The crowd is completely with him on every issue. (At least that is the feeling in the stadium.)

No rhetorical gimmicks.

Nothing phony. Just tells it like it is.

Very few "jokes" to warm up the crowd. Very rarely is there a metaphor or any kind of literary trick. He gets right straight down to listing the issues and his proposals. I have never heard a speech like his, and I have heard a lot of speeches, a lot of speeches. (Even given a few.)

He doesn't talk about oh, that young mother he met in Philadelphia or the farmer he talked to in Iowa. He talks issues, and the crowd loves him for it. All that stuff that politicians go on about to try to be folksy -- too phony for Bernie.

You'd think he would lose the crowd with his straight, no-nonsense Vermont approach to speechifying.

But no. He discusses briefly and clearly each problem facing us in its turn, and then offers his solution. It's dry. And everybody loves it because it is just so darned down-to-earth.

I'm not a politician, but I have been active in politics for some years off and on. Again, it was not the usual "political" crowd, not the same old faces, not the folks who run the community. I did not see any members of our City Council or any state senators or representatives although they may have been there.

Bernie's press secretary spoke about Black Lives Matter to huge cheers. The support from the crowd was unanimous and fervent on that issue. A young woman representing immigrants spoke, and representatives of the union that is on strike (I think) against United Airlines plus a representative from a nurses union spoke. Sarah Silverman introduced Bernie. I think I am leaving out a speaker and I apologize if I am.

The Bernie crowd includes a lot of people who usually don't vote and who are not involved in politics. They are not going to vote for any candidate other than Bernie for the most part. The crowd is devoted to Bernie. Many of them will not just vote for a default Democrat.

I think Bernie could well win the Democratic nomination, and if he does that, he probably will win the presidency.

Bernie makes it very clear that he will raise taxes on the 1%, do everything possible to end the use of tax havens by the very rich, avoid the kinds of trade agreements that have ruined our economy and taken our jobs and put people, not corporations in charge of the country.

Bernie is the best candidate I have seen in my lifetime.

And he is realistic about the fact that he can't make the changes we need all by himself. He is telling us that we have to be the movement behind him that gets things done.

One more thing: I really felt the Bern. It was so strong. I don't think that supporters of other candidates can know what that is like. It isn't just a slogan. It is a sense of quiet determination and of moral certainty that we just have to change our country for the better and that we can do it if we work together with determination.
