2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe narratives about Romney and Obama that are working with INDIES as I phonebank:
I do a lot of phonebanking and have been doing so once again in this cycle.
The major narrative that seems to have taken hold with the INDEPENDENTS (the people, in addition to our base, that we need to WIN the election) who do not support Mittens is:
"Romney is out of touch and does not understand the struggle of regular Americans."
** This is what they saying, and it tells us that the ads which BASH Romney on his job-killing Bain Capital career (especially those with the workers who give testimony to what Romney did to them), ads which say that he hides his millions in offshore accounts, and talking about how he has multiple mansions and big fancy boats and jet skis, etc. etc. are all WORKING and they need to KEEP IT UP at every chance. This is a GREAT narrative too because Romney does not come off as the "good old boy" that Bush pulled off with the RePUKES and which they like so much. ***KEEP SHOWING THE JET SKI PICTURE. Think about that. Think how much different that is than Bush with his chainsaw. Keep talking about how he avoided Vietnam in France and went to rich boy prep schools and talk about his wife's multiple Cadillacs. These all feed the very powerful "SILVER SPOONED OUT OF TOUCH RICH BOY WHO KILLS JOBS TO MAKE PROFITS" image that is working and which also projects him as an elitist which turns off the RePUKE redneck base.
(** Many who are saying they will vote for Romney are not at all enthusiastic. They are saying things like, "Well, I don't think he's anything great, but I'll vote for Romney. These attack ads also cut into any enthusiasm for Romney, and there is precious little of that. The ATTACKS must be CONTINUED BIGTIME UNTIL ELECTION DAY.) (*** Also, continuing to BASH Romney as the Etch-A-Sketch flip flopper that he is and as someone who can't give a straight answer to anything is also a GREAT line of attack and does that much more to turn off his base and damage him as a candidate. People like straight talk and people with principles. You get NEITHER from RoMONEY.)
Many Indies who support Obama are saying: "He needs more time to finish working on the economy."
Most Indies are actually pretty thoughtful. If you are phonebanking or canvassing and have people on the fence, talking about how severe the recession was (they get that), that many other countries are also struggling to dig out and that we are actually doing much better than other nations (England, Greece, Spain, etc.), and that more time is needed is a solid logical argument with the truly moderate thoughtful Indies.
These are some of the things I'm hearing so far, and I do a lot of this work.

(3,657 posts)It states quite simply that he ran up companies debt, forced them into bankruptcy
and ran off with millions. I think the Obama campaign needs to emphasize that forcing companies into bankruptcy,
kills off other companies'. They never get paid.
It's quite the unethical scam to do this intentionally

(57,936 posts)It is simply so obvious. Romney is a spoiled rich kid grown up.
Too confident for his talent. He made it on other people's money, not on his own wit or ability.

(20,450 posts)in at least 10 years! Rather, he sits back collecting from his Bain Capital "investments," essentially making money off of other people...THEN hiding the profits in offshore accounts!

(3,596 posts)I think two new developments are going to make that even more difficult for Mittens.
(1) Vacationing in N.H. near his $10M "get away" on a speedboat that probably cost more than some people's homes. His total detachment from the needs and desires of the American people is poignant.
(2) Vanity Fair's disclosures regarding that portion of his wealth that has been invested offshore in tax havens is devastating. Even with the little that has been verified it is clear he has engaged in tactics that, while legal, seek to hide his money offshore to avoid disclosure and/or payment of taxes on that income or the income generated by that wealth.
#2 especially is not going to sit well with the unemployed in battleground states. He continues to appear totally unaware of the life of the average American.
The more the media hypes the fact that Ann's horse is going to the Olympics brings attention to the fact that she owns a horse that is worth more than the total net work of many Americans, more than some low-wage earners may earn in 20 years and more money than most Americans have to retire on.

(28,349 posts)doesn't really have anything to say; and when he says it, no one knows whether the flip-flopper means it or not.
He's negative on Obama, but doesn't offer any worthwhile solutions.
It's hard to take serious a robot someone who isn't trustworthy.
