By John Nichols
Lincoln Chafee has no taste for neoconservative fantasies, or for the politicians of both major parties who entertain them.
That may not make him the winner of the Democratic presidential contest that the former Rhode Island senator and governor has entered -- Chafee's poll numbers are low, and his campaign has a quirky, do-it-yourself feel that tends to earn him marginal media coverage at best. But it could make him a duly disruptive voice in the Democratic debates that are scheduled to begin in October.

Chafee is skeptical about militarism and enthusiastic about diplomacy. He argues that issues of war and peace must be considered with a long view, that the challenges of the moment have roots that cannot be neglected, and that Americans must understand the damage done by past errors of judgment in order to avoid new errors of judgment. To that end, Chafee refuses to let other candidates -- Republicans or Democrats -- play the margins with regard to the Iraq war or its aftermath.

"No, no," the former senator replied. "I went to the CIA, sir, before I took my vote on the Iraq War. Listen to this: I asked them to show me all the evidence you have -- 'I have to vote on this in three weeks.' And all the analysts laid out what they had for evidence and it wasn't anything. I was there for more than an hour. There just was no evidence of weapons of mass destruction. It was all a hoax. That's the facts. That's the truth."
Chafee is an internationalist. He's not advocating for an isolationist approach. An outspoken backer of the Iran nuclear agreement and a supporter of broader diplomatic initiatives, Chafee argues that the United States has a responsibility to work with international organizations to promote peace and justice in the Middle East and globally.

These issues deserve a thorough airing in multiple public debate by the candidates.

Wise judgment, and discernment, deserve respect.

(4,748 posts)Hell, even I believed it was cooked up bs and I'm just a gone to seed old fart hiding out on the beach. In my mind this is a very important issue and deserves to be debated publicly.

I will NEVER forget that, because every day we are reminded by the BODY COUNT that is still ongoing as a result of that disastrous decision by far too many of our Representatives.
And no, sorry should never have to be said wrt to issues as serious as sending our troops to war. Over 6,000 of them are gone on the battlefield, so many more by suicide, and countless numbers whose lives are changed forever by disabilities both physical and emotional.
Good for Chafee, and for all those who TRIED to stop them.

Don't agree with him all the time, but he struck me as a rational, caring person with integrity. The kind you could discuss things with and reach solutions with.

I respect your position, however.

(4,748 posts)take down of the Neocons and various enablers. He seems to have foreign policy principles and ideas that would help our country. There was no mention of his stance on SS in the article. SS is something I think should be expanded, so would not vote for anyone who favors cuts. I do appreciate his support of the Iran nuclear deal and his judgement of neocons and their enablers.

He's not really at all the direction our party needs to go. But still, I'm glad he's on our side of the tent now,and I welcome his contributions to the campaign.

Hillary didn't bother to read any of the intelligence, claimed that there was a link between Saddam and Al Qaeda (even Joe Lieberman wouldn't say it was true for sure), and then voted for a $2 trillion war. That's a bigger failure than having top secret classified information on your personal e-mail server.
