Third Way Statement on Governor Martin OMalleys Social Security Plan
August 21, 2015
Political pandering at its worst
Social Security is in crisis, and we need solutions to fix it, not deepen the hole we are in. The idea of giving out more Social Security benefits to every single American may poll well at first. But Governor OMalleys expansion-for-all plan is not progressive, it is political pandering at its worst.
We must be working to ensure that Social Security benefits increase for those in need and that Social Security is preserved for generations to come, not heaping superfluous benefits on Lexus-driving retirees in Palm Beach. Instead of taking care of the elderly who rely on Social Security to live in dignity and making room for federal investments in children, research, and infrastructure, this plan is a transparent pander to those who dont need it.
We have admired the Governors data-driven approach to problems in the past. But unfortunately, the numbers in his Social Security plan just dont add up.

(5,213 posts)Republicans have paid a LOT of money to try to co-opt the Democratic party -- and it has worked very well from their point of view. It's been worth every penny for them to drag the party hard to the right through a front group like the Third Way.
You've got self-proclaimed Democrats here that not only openly admire the Third Way's subterfuge, they proudly espouse their policies.
So, NOT AT ALL WORTHLESS if you value remaking the Democratic party into the Republican party.

Thinkingabout
(30,058 posts)involved raising the full retirement age from 65 to 67, that is if you were born after 1938 then there would be a stepping increase in the retirement age. Also there has been increasing maximum wage in which FICA was withheld. This reform extended Social Security to the year 2037. A person can still elect to receive early benefits starting at 62 at a reduced rate according to the age the benefits was received. I can tell you this has been survivable. The Third Way has offered a plan to increase the age to 70 and increases on the maximum cap to extend Social Security past 2037. Yes, this is for future generations but I would think for those who are planning or currently receiving benefits would be interested in the future generations getting the same benefits. Yes it would be nice to receive increases but somewhere there has to be some reality, the money can run dry, we can not allow this to happen.

(18,290 posts)It's called, "raising the taxable limit on SS contributions." SS solvency "crisis" solved -- forever.
Not a new idea, but it apparently it is to 3rd Way shills such as yourself who prefer to Play Dumb about it and instead push for reduced benefits and raising the age limit on the other 90% of the nation.
Thinkingabout
(30,058 posts)not just take care of me person, I can not understand the greed to prevent the future to enjoy the opportunity I have had. What did I say was going to reduce the benefits? In fact not having Social Security reform will reduce the benefits, to ZERO, is this the reduction you are talking about? The last reform made it possible for benefits from 2012 to 2037, I was caught in that process, and yes I am a direct recipient of this reform for today the fund would have expired. Support the republicans, this is those who oppose the reforms, they don't like Social Security and it would serve their purpose to have it stopped.

(12,977 posts)Right now, if you wait until age 70 to retire, your monthly payments will be 32% higher than if you retire at 66.
Raising the retirement age means that the average retiree will be out by tens of thousands of dollars. That's not "the same" by any reckoning.
Thinkingabout
(30,058 posts)This will be raised. Currently one can choose to wait until 70 to start benefits and the amount is indeed larger. The benefits increase about 8% per year in delay starting benefits. The most important thing the reform does is to allow for the benefits to continue past 2037. By increasing the max cap and at one time Hillary had proposed $250,000. There has also been means testing for those receiving benefits, since the early thoughts was to assist older folks who did not have means. I would hope we get serious about reforms, 2037 will be here soon.

It would be class warfare, but it's ok if you are a democrat (sarcasm)
BTW, a lot of retirees live off SS. If you want to "fix the debt" maybe you should stop voting for every middle east war where Bibi wants US bodies to cover his policies.

The truth is that more than half of all married couples in retirement and about three-quarters of singles get 50% of their income or more from Social Security. For a fifth of married seniors and half of the unmarried, the program accounts for 90% of income.
O'Malley understands that; Third Way doesn't.

Any time money goes to "people in need", it somehow goes on detour to the chopping block.
TANF? General Assistance? Food Stamps? SSI? SSDI? When those are raised to take into account inflation or even to take into account what ANYTHING costs, I'll believe in "expansions for people in need".

Let's keep this picture clearly in focus. Uncle Sam borrowed against the Trust Fund Baby Boomers built up. This Trust Fund accrued as a result of the agreement reached in the early 80s (perhaps 1983) to buttress the Plan against the onslaught of the huge number of people retiring as the Boomers reached retirement age. Part of that agreement was to double the FICA withholding. As a result, Boomers became the first generation to pay for not only the retirement of those who retired before them as well as financing their own future retirement. That agreement also raised the retirement age.
And so we were set -- until Uncle Sam started borrowing against our Fund, as well as the retirement funds of Federal Government employees. Uncle Sam backed its debt by issuing Treasury Notes. When the time arrived that Uncle Sam needed to withdraw monies from the Fund for the Boomers' retirement, the Federal Government had to sell a like amount of the withdrawal of Treasury Notes. As Geitner himself publicly explained, "in this economy that is not easy to do." (loosely quoting from memory). So the Federal Government has to pay Social Security benefits to Boomers out of the general fund. This prompts politicians to go around saying, "Social Security is broke. It is nothing but a Ponzi scheme!" They want the debt forgiven at the expense of current and future recipients!
And then there are those billionaires who want to abolish Social Security because they do not think the Federal Government should be involved in programs such as this (the nanny state), as well as the corporations who want it abolished because they do not like having to pay that matching FICA tax for each employee. The sum total of those matching taxes adversely impact their bottom profit line. Get rid of it!
So I say raise the cap and fix the problem. Quit lying to the general public about the cause of this problem.
