2016
New York (CNN)Videographers, designers, writers, social media specialists, motion graphics artists create a perfect recipe for ... a presidential campaign? Welcome to the election that's moving beyond social and towards content creation.
"I definitely think we are a production company," Katie Dowd, the digital director for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, said during an interview inside Clinton's campaign headquarters in Brooklyn.
"We are producing our own content and we are thinking about how to make it viral, how to make it successful," she said.
Dowd, who was Clinton's new media director during her 2008 campaign, said the function of a campaign's digital operation has evolved over the last 10 years.
This also signals a new challenge for campaigns. There is a heightened pressure to go "viral" and snag the attention of younger audiences across social platforms, a portfolio of which expands far beyond just Twitter and Facebook and now onto newer apps and platforms like Snapchat and TheSkimm.

(146,317 posts)Clearly, people on such forums are making decisions based on something other than professionally produced media blitzes. Let's look at DU, for example. It has, maybe 4-5000 regular readers, and under 2000 active posters. Most have already made up their minds about the primary elections and will make up their own minds about the general election, too.
It would be a waste of money to attempt a campaign on such forums. On the other hand, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and all of those other social media outlets have millions of daily viewers. That's a much richer target for campaign materials. So, candidates will do things like produce social media oriented videos, posters, campaign images and seed them on those venues. From there, others will share them with their friends, like they do photos of kittens and puppies. The only real cost will be production of the materials. Distribution will be done by the users of those social venues. That costs nothing.
Any candidate not using this strategy is missing a bet.
So, no. Nobody's getting paid to do stuff on minor Internet forums that reach only a few thousand people. That would be a waste of time and effort. Those few thousands are also using social media, so they'll get reached anyhow.

What Hillary has and what Bernie has are WAY WAY WAY different. He does not have the money to spend on what she is doing. He has, however, had a huge Internet presence and it had benefited him greatly. There is nothing terribly slick about it, it is nice and workable and has been extremely helpful. She is late to the game but of course being Hillary she has spent the time with donors so she can put it all out like this.
Look I was referencing a very stupid, non productive thread filled with opinions and no proof. I was being silly and I really do try not to fight or be snarky but there is one thing I ask...Do not ever refer to that particular poster as proof of anything, see previous sentence.

According to two popular online measuring tools, no more than 44 per cent of her Twitter fan base consists of real people who are active in using the social media platform.
And at least 15 per cent more than 544,000 are completely fake.
StatusPeople.com, the oldest publicly available Twitter-auditing tool, reports that 44 per cent of the former secretary of state's followers are 'good'; 15 per cent are 'fake'; and 41 per cent are 'inactive,' meaning that they never tweet or reply to any tweets.

(7,393 posts) Digital firm Revolution Messaging runs Sanders online fundraising and social media efforts big for a candidate wholl rely on small-dollar contributions and benefits from a strong social-media presence. Four members of the team worked on Barack Obamas insurgent 2008 campaign Scott Goodstein, who ran Obamas social media efforts; Shauna Daly, who was deputy research director for the campaign; Arun Chaudhary, who ultimately became the first official White House videographer; and Walker Hamilton, the site architect for Obamas campaign. Kenneth Pennington, who ran Sanders Senate social media platform, and Keegan Goudiss, a Revolution Messaging partner who has worked for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, will also work on the digital team.
So are you planning to smear him for this as well?

Washington, DC Bernie Sanders presidential campaign and full-service digital firm Revolution Messaging announced today that the firm has been hired to lead digital efforts for Sanders 2016 campaign. The award winning firm led by Obama veterans is heading up social media, online organizing, online fundraising, web design, and digital advertising for Bernie 2016.
We are excited to bring on the team behind President Obamas groundbreaking social media, mobile and rapid response digital operations in 2008, said Sanders advisor Tad Devine. The groundswell of grassroots support for Bernie is already surpassing expectations and Revolution Messaging is the right team to help us harness that energy with innovative, cutting-edge technology. The campaign will bring together millions of Americans who are sick and tired of the economic and political status quo and want fundamental change in how we do economics and politics in this country. We believe that Revolution is exactly the right group to help us use social media to achieve that goal.

About TwitterAudit
Each audit takes a random sample of 5000 Twitter followers for a user and calculates a score for each follower. This score is based on number of tweets, date of the last tweet, and ratio of followers to friends. We use these scores to determine whether any given user is real or fake. Of course, this scoring method is not perfect but it is a good way to tell if someone with lots of followers is likely to have increased their follower count by inorganic, fraudulent, or dishonest means.
To be fair, Mitt had bunches of fake twitter followers too.

(36,988 posts)A striking finding in a recent Inspector General report revealed that the U.S. Department of State spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on Facebook "likes" in the past two years, effectively buying fans.
In order to bolster its presence on Facebook, the State Department paid about $630,000 for campaigns to increase its total number of likes, the May 2013 report indicates.

Dhaka, Bangladesh, a city of 7 million in South Asia, is an international hub for click farms.
The CEO of Dhaka-based social media promotion firm Unique IT World said he has paid workers to manually click on clients' social media pages, making it harder for Facebook, Google and others to catch them. "Those accounts are not fake, they were genuine," Shaiful Islam said.
A recent check on Facebook showed Dhaka was the most popular city for many, including soccer star Leo Messi, who has 51 million likes; Facebook's own security page, which has 7.7 million likes; and Google's Facebook page, which has 15.2 million likes.

It's just another media outlet, and political campaigns are using it because it's an effective way to reach people who aren't reading newspapers or watching TV news.
And why not approach these venues professionally? Any candidate who fails to do so is going to fall behind those who do.
I'm not sure what your concern is with using today's media for today's campaigns.

(145,288 posts)I have asked repeatedly how Sanders would be viable in a general election campaign where the Kochs will be spending $887 million and the RNC candidate will be spending another billion dollars. To date, the responses to my question has not been satisfactory. I would love to hear an explanation how you think Sanders is viable
A couple of your fellow Sanders supporters think that youtube and twitter are magic. On the silly thread about wasting money on polling, one of your fellow Sanders supporters claimed that TV ads and money was not necessary due to youtube and that Hillary Clinton was not a viable candidate because she was got good on youtube http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=546347 So running a real campaign that has people generating videos would be appropriate on that view of politics.
I live in the real world where campaigns cost money and money is important in poltics. If as noted by your fellow Sanders supporter, youtube is magic and replaces TV ads, they why are you upset?
AgingAmerican
(12,958 posts)That youtube 'replaces tv ads'. You made the whole thing up.
The OP you link to says Bernie is doing far better on youtube than Hillary is, which you do not refute.
Whining about what individual Sanders supporters have said won't help her one bit.

(145,288 posts)The Sanders people's claim that Sanders will be viable in a general election contest is based on magical thinking where youtube and social media is magic. Sanders will not have a chance of being the nominee unless he can show that he is viable in a general election contest where the Kochs will be spending $887 million and the RNC candidate will be spending another billion dollars. To be the nominee, Sanders will have to demonstrate viabilty at some point and todate the answers to my simple question are really not adequate
