Related: About this forum20 Years Ago Today, Hillary Clinton Gave A Rallying Cry For Women's Rights
On Sept. 5, 1995, then-first lady Hillary Clinton gave a forceful defense of womens rights, declaring that human rights are womens rights, and womens rights are human rights in a famous address at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing.
If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women's rights, and women's rights are human rights, once and for all, she said.
Since then, those words have become a rallying call for womens rights activists worldwide. The occasion was also notable because Clinton reportedly refused to soften her rhetoric in response to pressure from both the Chinese government, whose human rights abuses she directly called out in her speech, and from members of her husband Bill Clintons administration, who were worried about the effects the speech might have on the United States diplomatic relations with China.

That lack of objectivity speaks volumes, and puts emphasis on ones lack of credibility

(39,215 posts)results. How did this speech end up helping women? It was great at the time. But women across the world do not seem to have gained much since then.

(2,427 posts)You can't take umbrage with the message but you certainly can point out it's effectiveness or lack there-of.

Bernie Sanders has so much more class and character than some of his supporters, who do nothing to help Bernie

(46,585 posts)You were okay with that bit of swiftboating.
The hypocrisy of Clinton supporters here reeks.

(92,219 posts)has said, in fact just the opposite, but the usual suspects can't stand anything positive being said for a candidate they don't support

(46,585 posts).... I apologize for jumping to conclusions. The same thing happened to me yesterday. I was being confronted to answer for several threads which I had nothing to do with. My name wasn't in any of them. I think that treatment is epidemic and I didn't see it until it happened to me. So I apologize to you for looking tio you to answer for something somebody else did. I'm sure our opinion of things differs dramatically to be sure as illustrated by our different chouce in presidential candidates. but that doesn't give anybody license to blame others indiscriminately. For the record, I still think the swiftboating of Bernie on race here blows, but that's another conversation.

(92,219 posts)All one needs to do is look at his record to see his civil rights record is superb
I strongly believe most of those type of threads are to get a rise out of the opposing side, because they know better. It is politics at its worst.
There are plenty of issues that can be argued and debated against Hillary.
My only point being that if any candidate's actions represent a good thing, it would be nice, if we could attack the negative aspects, and not the positive. but heck, this is a political forum, for Democratic and progressive politics, and we are in the midst of primary season, so it happens.
You articulated the issue far better than I did.
supporting women's rights and civil rights are not the problems with Hillary or Bernie
