The Republicans who did ‘exactly what Hillary did’

One of the under-appreciated angles to the story about Hillary Clinton’s email problem is that Hillary Clinton isn’t the only one with an email problem. In fact, in an ironic twist, some of the former Secretary of State’s leading Republican critics have also relied on personal email accounts and shielded selected messages from public scrutiny.

Aliyah Frumin explained this week, for example, that “several potential 2016 Republican presidential candidates are facing email and transparency issues of their own” and they “also leaned heavily on private emails during their time in office – and have been criticized in the past for not releasing other documents – just as they skewer Clinton for not being forthright with her personal emails.”

Among all the excuses in the world, one seems the most childish:

"Well the other kids were doing it, too!"

Poor Rachel, I'm sad to see her carrying water for someone clearly unfit for this office.

Rachel, please give some love to the progressive candidates, Sanders and O'Malley.

I'm loving this "everyone is doing it" direction!

Everyone steals cable service?
Everyone cheats a little on their taxes?
Everyone keeps the money when they're given to much change?
Everyone exaggerates their experience in Bosnia?

What else does everyone do?

Look, you and I are on the same page about this "scandal," believe it or not. I think it's bullshit. All i'm saying to you is that if you're going to take the time to defend Clinton on the subject, at least make the effort to mount an actual defense. When you're piping out excuses like "everybody does it!" it doesn't look like you believe no laws were broken, it looks like you believe laws were broken BUT that Clinton should get special consideration.

"No laws were broken," so far as any of us know, that's true. Stick with that.

If you're going to mount a defense for Clinton, use a defense, not an excuse. "She didn't break any laws," that's all you need.

"But, but, but, the Republicans do it too!" isn't just an excuse, it's a lame excuse.

I think it's made-up media bullshit.

However, I'm trying to get you to use better arguments in advancement of that fact - "but everyone does it!" makes it look like you think there's something to be "guilty" of, and that "everyone does it" ought to get the person you favor off the hook. Instead you ought to be making the point that there is no guilt in the first place.

in their pretending at political and moral piety, is a denial that this email thing is only a national scandal because it's Hillary Clinton.

A lack of persuasive ability requires them to rely upon the MSM and right-wing propaganda to pump up the high horses they ride. It is an asocial affect that sticks out like a "kick me" post-it stuck above one's ass.

It is only a scandal because a clear majority of Americans do not trust Hillary Clinton.

If her trustworthy numbers were right side up this story would not have the impact that it does. The same goes with every other attack that they will throw at her. She is politically vulnerable. Perhaps fatally so.

For that matter if the public likes you enough, breaking laws can be rendered irrelevant as well.
