Obama opens up big lead in poll of Latino voters

President Barack Obama has a 70-22 percent lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney among Latino voters, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

The Latino Decisions national survey comes about a month after both candidates spoke to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, and have made strong pitches for the Hispanic vote.

Romney Wednesday unveiled a new Spanish language ad, and both he and Obama have intense efforts in states with large Latino populations--often swing states where the vote could determine the close outcome.

Obama had failed to stir great enthusiasm among many Latino voters until recently. But his June 15 directive allowing many younger undocumented workers to stay in this country gave him a boost.

The poll found that among foreign-born, naturalized citizens Obama leads 72-19 percent, and among U.S.-born Latinos he leads 69-25 percent.

The thought that they could turn this around with platitudes and tokens is laughable. Sometimes you just CAN'T "fix it in marketing"

"getting the messaging right" or a bunch of money thrown at the PR department is all that they need. Yet another marker for the complete cluelessness of these people.

To make sure these people actually GET to vote . . . I'm not a 'fear based' person - but if they are not allowed to vote due to some state level shenanigans - it's going to hurt us.

I ask because the Cubans I know don't really like being lumped in with the "Latino" designation. They're very proud of their unique heritage.

If so then those numbers are disastrous. Voters of Cuban extraction are overwhelmingly Republican and have been since the Bay of Pigs. Those numbers suggest that Cubans may be the ONLY Latino voters Romney is winning.

I can't imagine the majority would vote for Romney solely because he's a republican, especially after witnessing what a bonehead he is.
That's a good question.

It is not 1963! They are more Republican than other Hispanic groups but they are anything but the monolithic Rep block described here

Your argument that if this poll doesnt include Cubans these poll numbers are disastrous?

PS-your take on Cuban American vote should be updated form the 1985 version

if those numbers DO include Cuban Americans then the numbers are even worse than they look for Romney, since the strong Republican leanings of the Cuban-American community would be lifting those numbers.

to Cuba, or relatively little attachment. They also tend to be more progressive than their parents and grandparents. We shouldn't lump them altogether.

I do not believe that you have met any one Cuban who claimed not to be seen as a Latino. Theire "unique heritage" does not make them non-Latinos

although Texas like other gopper states are trying to displace many minorities voters. Mitten's son who speaks fluent Spanish now has a commercial out, and Pres O campaign should counter it by "voter suppression laws and FL purging"

I read somewhere (probably here at DU) that the Romney campaign has budgeted a whopping $10,000 to run that commercial. That'll get you what, about 30 seconds on public access somewhere?

Texas would give us such a boost. But what I am reading says that while Texas is maybe purple now, look to 2016 for anything real. We can still hope though, they loved him yesterday and the crowds looked big.
