O’Malley Not Backing Down on Call for More Democratic Debates

Matt Sheaff ?@MattSheaff
@nhpr’s @psutherlandNHPR reports that @MartinOMalley Not Backing Down On Call for More Debates #nhpolitics http://nhpr.org/post/o-malley-not-backing-down-call-more-debates

Since the Democratic National Committee announced last month its schedule of six debates before the presidential primaries and only one in each of the early voting states, Martin O’Malley has made it his mission to change that.

So far, he's had little luck. But it's not for lack of trying. Over the past few weeks, O'Malley's campaign has blasted out emails to supporters, reached out to prominent Democratic leaders and even created the Twitter hashtag #WeNeedDebate urging the DNC to add more debates on the schedule. O’Malley’s team is also pushing for the DNC to rescind proposed sanctions against candidates who participate in any non-DNC debates.

While other Democrats have grumbled about the DNC's schedule, O’Malley has been the most outspoken on the issue. He told the crowd at a DNC conference earlier last month that the current schedule is “bad for the country and it’s political malpractice for our party." O'Malley allies have accused the DNC of limiting debates to aid fellow candidate Hillary Clinton...

There are signs that the discontent with the schedule is rising. This week Democratic National Committee vice chairs R.T. Rybak and Tulsi Gabbard pushed for more debates in a Facebook post, saying having only six debates is a "mistake." And on September 16, O’Malley will be taking his fight to the streets by organizing a protest outside DNC headquarters in Washington, D.C.

So far, NH1 News in Concord has organized what will be New Hampshire's second Democratic debate on February 3. O’Malley eagerly accepted.

Though the way the polls are going for Hillary, she is going to be begging for a debate soon.

I have the feeling DWS and O'M have entered into that phase. Seems each knows to give in is worse the worst thing.

It's become a matter that reaches into something deep and central to both politicians.

She's missed opportunities four by my count if you separate the questions of more debates and the exclusivity agreement.

People who get that far down the road are in a position where now there must be some sort of apology, that's a threat, and it's likely she sees OMalley's insistence as the cause. That just adds hurdles for her to get over or around, seems very unlikely.

For his part OMalley see's it as existential to his campaign, and he see's DWS as the obstacle. Seems very unlikely he'll give in...

So it's seems its going to be a head bashing

dws et al are not even trying anymore....they know it is obvious shielding and don't care.

i do not see how this can stand

not to mention they are letting the gop run amok with the national stage and don't care about that either.

If she declines, she can stand on an empty stage at the official DNC debate with low viewership and think about how her good friend Wasserman-Schultz hooked her up.

The problem is that Webb and Chaffee are just fine with the debates as they are. I suspect they are stalking horses for the Veep position ready to fill whatever demographic, special interest, or geographic region that Hillary most wants to shore up support for in the general or capture in order to secure the nomination if things get dicey.

But yeah, I would love an AFL/CIO hosted debate.

….is hurting HRC, and not helping her.

Limiting the debates, more than in any other primary cycle, is just fueling the narrative that Hillary and the machine are not to be trusted.

They want candidates like O'Malley and Sanders to seem unfamiliar to many voters when the primaries roll around -- especially if those voters agree with the positions of said candidates (otherwise, there is no point in limiting their public exposure).
