(16,685 posts)There is a rot in our party that is preventing us from taking stands on issues that are important to the very people whose votes we need.

(14,733 posts)They always accuse folks on the left of demanding 'our way or the highway' - that we want our candidate or we won't support theirs, but the reality has shown, time and again, that the vast majority of folks on the left will ultimately vote for the centrists while holding their noses. But get an actual leftist candidate in, and I'm willing to bet we see a mighty wave of apathy from the centrists, who will suddenly find themselves agreeing economically more with whoever the right puts up than Sanders. They'll show their true colours by crossover voting, like the Democrats in Florida in 2000 who voted for Bush. That it's more important to them to maintain the status quo than vote in somebody who might not want to crush the middle class and feed everything to the oligarchs.

(48,181 posts)The PTB, not exactly the DNC, but what us old folks used to call 'da establishment' will pay lip service to Sanders campaign while working to sabotage it. Note that the same group of shitheads on the Republican side will do likewise to Trump. Their thing is control. They do not want an uncontrolled president.

(7,865 posts)I think we should be careful about getting too wrapped around the axle about this. This kind of talk gets pretty dejected and defeatist. In that way we end up being our own worst enemy.
I don't think any of the establishment democrats are going to pull a Nixon '72 stunt (after McGovern won the nomination) and throw support to the republicans. It would just be too self destructive and as bad as Nixon was he is nowhere near as insane as the modern GOP.
