Mitt Romney's presidential campaign is stumped by the candidate's rapid Twitter follower growth, with the candidate's account gaining more than 75,000 followers in less than a day.
The website 140elect.com, which tracks the Twitter presence of presidential candidates, first noticed the spike.
Zac Moffatt, the Romney campaign's digital director, rejected accusations that the campaign was "buying" followers for Romney, who trails Barack Obama's account by more than 16 million followers.
"We have reached out to Twitter to find out additional information regarding the rapid growth," he told BuzzFeed.

... then you seem to think you're screwed in some way in a popularity contest, which elections often are.
Still, I'd be interested in seeing graphs on how Obama's twitter followers jumped since he opened his account for a comparison, especially during the 08 election.
Either way though, the sudden jump is very suspicious.
I can think of only 1 innocent explanation, Romney's campaign in the last few days suddenly decided "hey, why don't we add a link on all our news letters to supports to follow us on twitter".
