2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPlease don't shoot me for suggesting this, but after reading how the Bernie was received at LibertyU
It occurred to me that the Pope is visiting America.
Can you imagine if the Pope endorsed Bernie?
I know, I'm dreaming... I haven't like any Popes
since Pope John XXIII, but I kinda like this Pope.
Ok I can just hear the snide remarks coming....

(52,589 posts)I hope at least Bernie is on this Pope's radar.

(14,733 posts)I don't even like pastors or priests endorsing specific candidates.
I'm fine with them giving socialistic Bible messages though, about helping the poor and the sick and so on.

(9,688 posts)It's absolutely not the place of an international religious leader to endorse particular candidates. Nor is it the place even of US Catholic bishops to endorse particular American political candidates (not that that stopped toads like Cardinal Burke and other arch-conservative bishops from essentially doing so in 2004 )
Plus, it would be especially inappropriate, as well as politically stupid, to insert oneself in the PRIMARY election. Many Democratic politicians even stay out of endorsements in congressional primaries, especially if they're outside their home state (while still vowing to support the winner of those regional primaries).
However, I am very much looking forward to his giving Congress hell next week, and to watching the Republican Catholics squirm

(52,589 posts)I would like the Pope to at least hint at Sander's economic positions. That would be enough.

(9,688 posts)I'm sure he will have lots to say about the poor and about unfair economies. I'm looking forward most of all to his giving them hell on climate change.

(15,480 posts)He can also quote Sanders statements re social policies on which Sanders & the Pope share opinions. I hope Pope Francis does just that.

(12,157 posts)As a head of state, albeit a tiny one, I don't believe the pope would want to be seen as interfere with another nation's election processes.
It would be fun it he did it anyway at the congressional address

(30,481 posts)As someone who isn't big on Sanders I also don't get it. Why would anyone want the endorsement of one of the most powerful disseminators of hate and bigotry in the world? It is a thought exercise in political pandering. I understand his rhetoric matches with many Sanders supporters beliefs on economic justice, I believe they often see eye to eye on social issues as well. He is extremely socially conservative and should play no role in endorsements in the democratic side. I would have more respect for a Liz Chenney endorsement over that of the Pope. Yes, Liz is less socially conservative than the Pope. That's how far off the rails this is. The Pope is strongly opposed to my rights and the rights of people I care deeply about.

(36,063 posts)I don't think the Pope really needs to go any further toward endorsing Sanders.
Demonstration of the shared radicalism of Christianity -and- democratic socialism...shared empathy and interest in community is quite enough.
