Hillary Clinton: Why She Continues to Ignore Bernie Sanders

Hillary Clinton: Why She Continues to Ignore Bernie Sanders

During a campaign stop in Iowa on Monday, Hillary Clinton was asked twice about Bernie Sanders: Once by a 20-year-old college student who wanted to know Clinton's views on him, and another time by a local reporter who asked if she was “worried” about him as he gains in the polls.

In response, Clinton told the student that there will be "plenty of time” to draw contrasts in the future. She told the reporter that no, she’s not worried. And she told both of them that she’d like, instead, to focus on the Republicans.

She did all of this, by the way, without ever mentioning her democratic challenger's name -- not even once.

For now, they say, the message within the campaign remains the same: Continue with the plan as planned — and don’t engage.

In addition, Clinton’s super-PAC, Correct the Record, has started to circulate negative attacks on Sanders, according to an email sent to the Huffington Post — a sign there is growing concern in Clinton-world.

Meanwhile, Clinton is increasing her media appearances and trying to find new ways to highlight her personality out on the trail.

Clinton is ahead in the polls, so she is only giving free publicity to Sanders if she mentions his name. Her best bet is to respond, "Bernie who?" She only has to get serious about Sanders if he starts to catch up in the Super Tuesday states, and his progress there is steady, but slow. Clinton should be able to wait him out, as long as people don't wake up and catch on that the party is about to nominate another business-as-usual candidate.

Do you really feel watching the Republican debates would influence someone, anyone, to swing toward their side? Sure, it whips up the faithful GOP base, but undecided and independent voters would surely be repelled by what they see on the tee-vee. Am I wrong about this?

can't be persuaded by reasonable common sense democratic positions.

There is nothing being said about what Democrats believe. Running on fear of crazy Republicans has lost us the House and Senate. It's a proven loser as is Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

but by encouraging people to watch the repug debate and tweet along with him, sanders is drawing attention to his and dems policies. seems like a good idea, no?

and still, for those social media challenged folks who aren't being reached by dems and who are only seeing repugs, again, the gop is a seething mass of vermin steeped in it's own excrement with it all being televised for the world to see. to say they are showing their asses is to understate it, and only other like-minded vermin could be swayed by them.

Despite Bernie's unexpected high numbers in IA and NH he's still considered a very longshot to win. If she takes the time to address him then that gives Sanders extra credibility. If he somehow continues his unlikely ascent then she can go after him. Plenty of time... in fact she can just wait until the debates.. which is pretty much what she said.

he explains that he while he respects her, they have serious policy differences and then he goes on to explain what those differences are. He doesn't dismiss her condescendingly and try to pretend like she doesn't exist. But then again, he actually has positions that are defensible and resonate with the American people, so I can totally understand that this different tactics involved

That is how big her lead is.

The thought of her acting as if she is already the nominee is really simple to understand. Might it hurt her in the end? Possibly. Is is understandable? By anyone who is not kidding themselves as to how far ahead she is. Shit, even the republicans are already running against her. They would love to feast on Sanders. But they, along with a majority of those paying attention, know it will be Clinton they have to beat.
